Cargo rack question....

I'm looking for ideas for roof-top cargo racks. I currently have a set of Thule crossbars and would like to hear from folks that have used the Thule MOAB basket or the Yakima
Load Warrior basket.
Also are there other brands that are just as good as the Thule/Yakima and maybe not as $$$? I seem to remember my Jeep catalog having alot of stuff from Garvin. Wondering if folks have used these (or other brands) on the 4Runner.
I'm hoping to fit my 40"x 32" soft Thule cargo bag on the basket and still have room for a couple ActionPacker type boxes up there as well.

Any thoughts are appreciated.....

I have the Yakima Load Warrior. Perfect size and can be expanded. Tough steel and powdercoated. Wind noise is annoying at first, but I don't ride with it on all the time. Easy on and off. Mounted it towards the back looks sharp, May add a fairing to decrease the wind noise in the spring........worth the price in my mind but hey that's just me.

I had the Thule Moab on my 3rd gen 4Runner and loved it. When I got the 4th gen, I put it up top and after about 3 hours trying to figure out how to eliminate the wind noise, I gave up and sold it. I tried moving it forward and backward, with and without the wind deflector on the front, I even got out some paper and tried doing some physics to try and figure out exactly where to put the rack to cancel out the frequency it was producing, all that did was produce a different frequency.

I would recommend the Yakima for a 4th gen, a friend has it and it doesn't make any noise.

Did he mount in frontwards or towards the back. I am about 1 foot behind my sunroof and I definately hear it. I am getting used to it.......if he has tips pass em along?
 
I used this rack from Atlantic British in the past on my Range Rover. It's adaptable to Yakima & Thule crossbars and is not too expensive. No real appreciable wind noise.

I found a place online that has Yakima stuff at 20% off right now.
If I got the Load Warrior with the extension it would be 62x39
inches which would be plenty big enough for my soft cargo bag and still have room left for other stuff.
Hopefully the wind noise won't kill the deal.....because right now with just the cross bars up there it's pretty noisy. I like that the Yakima basket has a fairing built-in. I hope it's somewhat functional.

Have you considered a hitch mounted rack? I just got this one from Rola and couldn't be happier with it.

It's great to load up for a trip that doesn't require some serious off-road
 
I have a Surco Safari Basket. They are definitely not as well made as Yakima, but they are very affordable and also extremely light weight. The wind noise is not horrible, but you definitely notice it.

I got a used 45"x60" basket for $150, which included light tabs.

Thanks....that Rola is sweet. I currently do not have a hitch but plan to get one installed so I can use my hitch mounted bike rack .
That is the reason I an planning on going with the roof basket because I hope to be able to get 3 bikes on the bike carrier.
I say"hope" because 2 of the bikes are for my kids and I'm not sure they will fit on the bike rack I have.
I guess I could get the Rola and then just prop them up on the cargo rack and secure with cam-straps......either way, It looks like I need to get a hitch installed.
 
I think the Yakima Mega Warrior fits the best on the 4th gen 4runner. The load warrior is great for the 3rd gen, but I think it's a bit small on the 4th gen. I love mine, gives a very nice look for the truck. You have to shop around for prices, I got mine for $325 with free shipping and no tax but I think there was some rebate in it.

I have the Yakima Load Warrior and it is great. I also bought one of those Yakima cargo backs that you can place on the Load Warrior. It is waterproof and fits perfect on the Load Warrior. I have thought about going with the extension but I don't think I need it right now. Definatly go with the Load Warrior. For the price you can't beat it.

:iagree: IMHO I think the Load Warrior looks small and out of place on a 4th gen, go for the Mega Warrior

I think the important thing is to know how much weight we can put up there. changes the dynamics of the vehicle esp in wind. can spell trouble weighted to heavily IMO.

Good point...based on what the rep told me it has a recommended load limit of 150lbs.

I really just bought it so I can load spare gas outside my rig.

To be honest, I have no plans on placing items up there except for gas. I did the gas in the trunk thing twice and it wasn't a very happy feeling driving with that smell for long periods of time :bash:

copy the gas. how are you storing and securing on the basket?
 
I agree guys about loading up the top with too much wt.
I plan to use whatever rack I end up buying as a platform to hold a soft Thule cargo bag filled with all the soft goods needed for a protracted camping trip...ie: sleeping bags/pads....awning tarp, tent. Kitchen box and heavy cooler will ride in the rig.
I plan to get my hitch mounted bike rack out of the attic in the morning and see if it will hold my mountain bike and two kids bikes...we'll see.
