Carrying a tool kit for offroad driving...

I'm putting together a set of tools to keep in the 4Runner for offroad emergencies. Because I might need a tool to get myself out of a bad situation, I am only using the best and strongest tools. Speaking of sockets, what sizes should I carry? I want to be prepared for most minor and major parts failures or replacements. Just worried about getting home, not rebuilding the vehicle on the trail. CV joints, etc?... Do I need to carry any special sized sockets for certain repairs?

I could have searched better before posting... I have been reading and searching for almost an hour now and haven't found a comprehensive answer to "Which sockets are critical in the woods/offroad?"; my question is about needed sockets, not a whole tool kit. If anyone knows that answer, it would save me some time. I'll keep searching and reading

1/2 and 3/8 drive, 6 point metric craftsman sockets. And vice grips, not knock offs. Also craftsman has universal metric sockets that grab 4, 6, 12 point i.e. for rounded off sockets. What sizes - I've personally used as large as 24mm if I remember. I bought an empty "craftsman carrying case with storage" and put only what was needed in it. And a multimeter and flashlight - tadaa.

(But most people need a cell phone and a hidden spare key and that fixes like 90% of all problems lol)

Sockets: The usual metric suspects that you'd bring for any metric car in mostly 3/8" drive: 10/12/14/17/19/21/24, plus a few less-common sizes that I can't remember exactly(such as 8/16/22?)
Handy to have a small 1/4" nut-driver type with the smaller sizes(7/8/9/10).
3/8" extensions: 1"/3"/6"x2/ + super-long, also a wobble and u-joint.
24mm probably on 1/2 drive (add breaker bar and deep 21mm for lug nuts).

I also have a few odds and ends like a set of pliers, screwdrivers, 1/2 breaker bar, 1/2 to 3/4 adapter, some large sockets for CV nuts, etc. I've never had to use any of it so far, at least not for my truck.

If you wanna keep it short and simple. You can almost rebuild the whole 4Runner with 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21mm sockets/wrenches. Throw in couple different driver sizes and some screwdrivers and what not, your set.

Thanks. That info is all helpful. I didn't know if there is a need to carry a 22mm, maybe a 15mm (end links?). I'll be carrying a 3/4" ratchet and 1/2" adapter. I have lots of impact sockets but I don't want to bring extras.

With a stock 4runner, will I ever need to carry (use) the following size sockets? 11mm, 13mm, 15mm, 16mm, 22mm, 27mm?

I cannot think of anything that would use any of those sizes... Pretty sure the end links are a 14 on the frame side and 17 on the bar side.

Don't forget your 35mm for your CV swaps =)

Cool, thanks. I'll be carrying a 1-3/8" socket to handle 35mm duties. My off-road kit is coming along well. I'm waiting for an impact driver right now.

Double check me on this, but I believe the oe skid plate bolts might use 13 or 14, and the driver's console takes either 11 or 13 I think. Dunno why you'd need to get at the gauge cluster or steering column in the field, but, stuff.
