Cash's build of Lucky the 4runner

I know everyone has seen me posting but I finally got the lift put on and decided to do my build thread.

On June 1 I bought a 2000 Limited with 218k miles on it from the original owner:

Timing belt and water pump were done last year but it needed struts, tires (fronts were on belts), springs, and shocks. As I normally do when I buy a vehicle the first thing I do is change all of the fluids and give it a thorough tune up. Plugs and wires were original as I suspect the fuel filter was also given that the gas I poured out of it stained my concrete brown for a few weeks and I installed a B&M 70264 aux trans cooler.

Pics of the spark plugs:

Next thing I bought was a set of 265/75/16 Nitto Terra Grapplers and ordered the Bilstein 5100 front struts with Eibach springs along with the ToyTech Superflex rear springs and extended length Bilstein 5100 shocks and the front diff drop kit:

Finally. Time to drive it for the first time since bringing it home. I was half way to work on Monday when it overheated on me. I got to the office (barely) and popped the radiator cap open and the radiator was bone dry as was the reservoir and there was a bunch of this orange//brown crud in everything:

Awesome. So I go through the whole flushing process and get it cleaned up. 3 days later I'm running errands and I hear a drip sound and smell coolant. Turns out the orange//brown crud was stop leak that was plugging a broken heater core. YAY!! After letting the thing sit for 2 weeks out of pure anger I tore in to it over the last couple of days:

Also discovered the heater control valve was trashed so I replaced it:

Now rewind and remember where I said I bought a lift for this thing? That was 4 weeks ago. I know I suck. Yesterday after refilling and burping the radiator from the heater core fiasco I tore in to the truck and knocked the whole lift out:

Finished!!

This morning after breakfast my wife and mother in law went to run errands and I hopped in the 4runner for a spin. Picked up a rack of ribs for dinner tonight, dropped off the strut compressor, and then hit the construction lot behind my neighborhood to test the suspension:

Needless to say I'm pretty happy with this thing. I'll drive it for a week to get the suspension to settle in and retighten everything before I get an alignment. It needs gears in the most awful of ways and having a bad fuel pressure regulator isn't helping. So a set of 4.88's, a locker, extended rear brake lines, and a panhard drop bar are coming in the next few months. My brother in law has a new jeep that we've wheeled with and I go with his jeep friends a few times a year so I'm excited to bring the 4runner out and get to play with my own toy this time.

Few pictures of the B&M, Magnefine filter, and the Toytec diff drop. The one's for the B&M aren't the best but you at least get the idea of where it's mounted. I ended up being able to use existing bolts so I didn't have to drill any new holes for anything. Worked out quite nicely.

Been driving the truck for a couple of weeks now letting the suspension settle before I get an alignment. The more I thought about it the more I figured I needed to do a front end update. So I ordered LBJ's, ITRE, and OTRE and while I was there I figured that I needed to get the geometry on the rear end lined back up so I ordered a panhard drop bracket and while I was on the thought path of stability I went ahead and ordered a set of Spidertrax spacers. $730 later I'm completely drained but at least this thing will be setup for a long and healthy life. The only two things I've got left to order are the SPC upper control arms and extended brake lines but those are going to have to wait until after my trip to Italy next month. My wife is going to kill me when she sees this bill. Oh well. At least I'll get to enjoy it for a little while HAHA. I'll get pictures up once I get to putting stuff on. Most of it should be here today//tomorrow and I'll put stuff on on Saturday while the brisket is cooking.

I really, really hope it doesn't give you more issues! My brother bought a super clean 1995 4Runner with 95k miles and it did that exact thing, except when he was driving it home (200+ miles) it completely dried up the coolant. Had it towed to my place and I flushed the heck out of it, replaced the radiator and a bunch of other stuff but still gave him issues. Then a few months later the head gasket blew and basically every metal line it in was full of that rust gunk like you have. 2 years later and it's finally running well, or at least for now.

I guess the moral of the story is: if it gives you grief again just know that there is an end, eventually ALL of that gunk will break down and flush out with time. It might take a while though so don't give up on it!

I figured out my crap was stop leak. I absolutely loathe this stuff. I've blown all of the lines out, crunched the stuff up in other lines, and I'm on my 4th flush with the prestone radiator flush treatment. Pulled the lines off going to the rear heather and the rear heater is completely clogged. Going to try and get that changed out this weekend and then continue flushing but at that point everything should be free flowing and I can get on with an actual flush and fill. I've got 15gal of old coolant//flush//water mix sitting in my garage I need to get rid of. Pain in the butt. Knock on wood it hasn't given me any other fits. I drive it daily on the toll road in 3rd gear at 80mph in 99* heat with no issues. I really can't wait to get a set of 4.88's to start using OD.

Just a nice side photo shot of the lift installed.

My mistresses. Once hunting season rolls around the car is going under surgery for a set of long tubes, a tune, and possibly a 4.08 gear set.

It's all looking good! Well, minus that HIDEOUS bovine sticker you have on the rear bumper. BOOMER SOONER! :boxer: :biggrin1:

My dad's a sooner fan and my wife and I are Longhorn fans. Football season is always interesting :satan:

Btw, which coils did you use up front, what's the settled lift height, and how is the angle of your cv's

Eibach coils. Front has settled from 38.5" to 38" after 2 weeks of driving. CV angles look fine. I've got a diff drop kit on it as well.

Great build so far! You're brave to tackle replacing the heater core, I would have just had a shop done it lol. Just curious why do you drive with OD off? Your new tires aren't much bigger than the stock size. In my old 99 limited I had the same size tires and it didn't feel underpowered enough to not use OD on the freeway.

It won't hold 70mph in OD on the freeway. Slightest hill or wind will have the converter unlocked or downshifting and that's hard on the transmission. Trying to maintain 80mph is a laughable exercise in OD. Mileage isn't affected, I stay in the power band, and I can keep up with traffic safely. Still doesn't have the guts to pass anyone but at least I can maintain speed. I'll be glad when I've got the $1500 to install a locker and 4.88s front and rear. That and a supercharger and this thing will have plenty of power at that point.

And since I'm here, week before last I came out to a puddle of coolant under my truck. Radiator finally cracked. Guess the one good thing about having a crap ton of stop leak in the system is it still works to plug leaks so thankfully I didn't overheat on the way home.

So I installed a new radiator, bypassed the rear core (it was clogged from stop leak), flushed the stop leak from my brand new heater core, and tried to flush as much from the block as I could so it wouldn't clog my new radiator. Sure enough though once the thermostat opened the clear water in the radiator started turning orange again. This stuff is a royal pia to get rid of and should never be allowed to be sold.

Got the lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, and wheel spacers installed. I'm in the process of flushing the coolant system out for the 7th time in 3 months. I haven't run coolant in this thing in 2 months. Just water and coolant flush. If I ever hear of anyone using stop leak I'll personally travel to their location and kick them in the cajones. Thankfully it appears that I'm coming to the end of this long battle as the water is slowly turning less and less orange and is staying clearer longer so maybe in the next month or so I'll get to run actual coolant in this thing. On the plus side though, it's been a 100+ the last 3 weeks and even sitting in grid lock with the AC on the temp gauge hasn't budged.

Well today the kitty decided it didn't need to be under the truck anymore. So I gave it a permanent vacation. Going to finish that up tonight along with the o2 simulator and see what happens. Still running through the stock muffler so hoping it's not to loud.

Got the windows tinted finally. 20% all the way around with a 20% eyebrow. Installed the toytec bump stop extensions, panhard drop, and extended rear brake line. Flushed the radiator AGAIN and flushed the brake system. Not much to show in the way of the pictures but I'll get some up later.

Changed the trans fluid today. First time it's been done in 225k miles. Also swapped out the brake booster and master cylinder. First scheduled rock crawl is on the 22nd. Can't wait.

Yup. Brakes work quite nice now. Also learned I don't have ABS. Also realized that sliding stops are fun. And yes, that is some nasty fluid. Surprisingly the magnets weren't very dirty at all. Was actually really surprised by that.
