cat conv.

So my cat. has been bad for a while and is causing the check eng. light to go on. Does any body have any recommendations as to a brand or even a place to buy a new cat? I can search them online and I get a price range of 60$ for a magnaflow to 300$ for a stock. Is there a difference or should I just go the cheap route? I've got a 98' SR5.

Here's my very first post, so might as well jump in the deep end. I had the cat go south on my '02 limited with 78k on it (the warranty on the cats goes at 75k, nice). After talking to as many folks as I could, including my usual mechanic who I trust, the decision was to put the stock Toyota cat on. I was told by the tech at a local muffler shop that he could put an aftermarket cat on for about $150, but had had repeat problems with Toyotas coming back for the Check Engine light. My wrench told me that Toyota is one of the few that the sensors don't like the aftermarket cats. It hurt greatly, about $1200 installed, but the concensus was that it would be the only real fix. The Check Engine light has not come back on since.

Cat Failure?

Wondering how you diagnosed that your catalytic converter had failed and needed to be changed. I am interested because my Check Engine Light just came on tonight.

Crud. I have to do something about it soon though. And now I'm in even deeper because I have no idea what I did to car the other night but I think I might have cracked a header or the exhaust because now it is twice as loud. It can be diagnosed at any service station. So did you have to replace all of the senosors or what? I guess it doesn't really matter if the check light is on. I'll try to go with the same type of cat. that is on there now.

CBRman, Who told you 75k?

I am 99.9% sure that 8yr/80k is a federal regulation for a cat to be warrantied. Reguardless of the manufacturer.

Jeremy, I went back and looked at my receipt, it was 80k, and my odometer was 83k. I was suffering from CRS, my bad. I just remember it beig 3k too late.
