Hi- I took my 02 4Runner to the dealer to have engine light code checked (friend of a friend works there so it was free) & the fault code is PO420 & the printout they gave me specifies the "B1 Cat". But none of the research on here tells me the PO420 fault code is specific to the cat without further testing. Does the dealership have some magic that determines it's for sure the cat & not the sensors? Obviously I'd rather change the sensors first, which I can do myself, but don't want to waste money if it's the cat. Engine lights are constant & re-setting made no difference- they came back on after a few miles. I did clean the fuel system/injectors & that made the lights go out for just a few days. Thanks for any input.

How many miles are on the vehicle, that can be a consideration in diagnostics as well. Many shops/dealers will be more willing to condemn a cat hovering around 300k vs. saying it needs sensors.
