Catalytic Converter - Rock Auto vs CA

So i've gotten P0420 and P0430 codes a couple times in the past... I've even received a PO333 once, but never again after that.

Its been a while since its happened... but I was thinking of replacing the cats if it keeps happening.

I started shopping around... the prices of cats on Rock Auto can be had a lot less than anything else I can find locally. I also noticed that Rock Auto won't ship to CA.

Is there actually any real difference, or am I just paying for the CARB sticker for CA emissions?

Why not just have the cats "repaired" because of P-Codes when I go on a road trip, out of state?

I would think if they're are bad & it's (much cheaper to replace the 4 sensors) buy from TAP ! I did but that was awhile ago , supposedly can't ship out of state ? Are ones from Rockauto oem ?

It's not OEM, but every option shows "Not legal for sale or use in California"

Average price is like $200 for a cat on Rock Auto... much much cheaper than anything I have found locally.

Dealer pricing is well, dealer pricing... $2000 to replace both.

Be sure it's not the o2 sensors. It's common when the rear o2 sensor fails it does not trigger a code for it and says the cat is bad

My only concern is any smog shop worth their salt would see that...

In CA, they changed the way they do smog. They actually visually inspect all those items, including the CAT, O2 sensor, along with a bunch of other things.

I recently got m 2006 passenger sedan smogged and they didn't even do a sniffer test. Plugged something in to OBD port visual inspection.

How do I test an O2 sensor?

Can I just take some voltage or resistance measurements with a multimeter or it is easier to just replace them and hope for the best?

When I 1st got my 05 soon after pulled the dreaded p020 & why I joined forum , so after much searching & reading @BWInc I replaced all 4 ! Back 2 o2 are very easy but not so the a/f sensors but cleared them up ! Much cheaper too

You could buy one off Ebay which have Walker & Bosal rear converters similar in price to RA.

The real killer, (at least on the V8's), is the front crossover pipe which is essentially only available from the dealer which lists in the high 300's. My pipe's flanges were rusted so I had to have one, ($220 shipped from a online Toyota dealer parts department).
