Catalytic Convertor

I have a 2000 SR5 with 91,000 miles. I recently had the check engine light come on and a scan indicated that the Bank 1 convertor was below threshold.

I purchased the car new in NY and for some reason it came equipped with California emissions control.

The parts alone approach $1,900. Can I replace the convertors with non-California emissions control convertors, which are much cheaper?

A few months ago I replaced the air/fuel ratio sensor, another $300 part plus installation. I have also had the front brakes changed 4 times (maybe I brake too hard!). I purchased a Toyota thinking they were better made and I am spending more on repairs than I ever have with the American cars that I have owned.

Try a bottle of 'Guaranteed to Pass' by CRC first. It's about siz bucks and it worked on a cat for me, cleaned it up, that is.
