Caved and bought a GX

Was looking for an inexpensive 2nd or 3rd gen 4runner for a while. Wife started getting impatient about it and worried about how crappy all suvs we’ve seen. Also considered about a dozen other suvs. Been looking for 3-4 months. But thanks to the guy who overslept and didn’t answer my text yesterday bc I now own a 2013 GX460. I fu’king hate dealers and it was a rough experience but ended up getting I think a good price for it.

Hoping I made a good choice with this. It’s got the most extensive service history I’ve ever seen. Always serviced at the dealer who sold it and I bought from. One owner. No accidents and pretty clean.

Just the little bit of driving it I love it way more than my Grand Cherokee. Only downside... not a huge fan of white but we’ll see if some small mods changes that.

Picture won’t post right

Been 15 years on these type of forums and i don’t understand why photos post upside down???? Sorry tried to remove and repost but same issue.
 
GX is the right move... ill be joining you soon.

Rotate the photo in camera before posting it, or fix it in imgur or something. Ive never had this problem lol.

I tried rotating the photos I attempted to post and they still came out upside down.

I gusss I’m stubborn and don’t want to use a secondary site to upload the photos to and from.

The last photo was a screen grab on my phone and cropped within the camera app.

I still don’t understand why forums sometimes rotate a photo when uploading them.

I think I'm going to be heading in the same direction as you. I really wanted a 3rd gen, but not having great luck finding a nice one. Multiple people have told me I should go with a gen4 as they're better in most every way, but pricing is kind of stupid and I really don't like the styling.

I figure if I'm going to go gen 4, might as well get a GX470. Pricing is similar and IMO thye look better and are a bit nicer. Plus I like that they're not as common, and I'm thinking a Lexus owner is prob going to do a good job of sticking with the maint. schedule.

I was just looking at a Carfax on an '05 with 122k miles for 9,700, it's had pretty much all the recommended maint, and at the same Lexus dealer by it's two owners.

Only thing that gives me pause on these is the outdated nav.

Buy one without nav and then put in whatever you want :)

It's also possible to do a conversion to non nav, but obviously a bit more complex than just buying one that way.

Few issues for me with the gx470s was the outdated feel on the interior, possible issues with rear air ride (can be expensive to repair), frame rust, and the third row/trunk space is terrible compared to the newer design on the 460s.

Download the waze app. It gives real time traffic, alerts for cops, potholes, etc. Even will let you know when to leave to arrive a a specific time. I’m not a fan of lexus’ Nav even in my 460. It’s slow, cumbersome and it feels like I have to do three different things when it should have been only one click.

Congrats on the GX!

I love my 2011.

IMO 2010-2013 is still the sweet spot for GX price/value, and they get a little cheaper every day.

Sorry I haven’t been on in a while. $28k. It was a few thousand cheaper than other colors. Also I had some negotiating points like the rear bumper had a broken tab and isn’t flush with the quarter panel.

I still can’t believe how much nicer of a ride this is than the 4runner. I drove one back in 2015 before I purchased my Jeep Grand Cherokee. This GX is night and day better than both. I actually like the styling of the body better than the newer ones. Not a fan of Altezza lights. And yes the price was perfect for what we wanted.
 
Been eyeing the '10-'13 to death over the last couple of weeks. A colleague of mine was looking at one as his wife totaled their 5th gen 4R. He ultimately passed on it because he said it had less cargo room than the 4R. Any other impressions you have of it? Really debating the possibility of this over the next couple years.
 
I don't own one but went through this same thing.

We ultimately decided on a the 4Runner for the "less complicated" of the two. We wanted KDSS and something that would do well in snow and off road. It won't be a rock crawler either way, but I like something that will go where we want to go with no fret.

The Lexus was great to drive. Sitting in the car for the first time was very weird; it feels like a sedan but you know you're in an SUV. It's fantastic. Normal day-to-day driving they drive very similar, the Lexus has a smoother transmission but for my driving style, which isn't aggressive acceleration or anything, the V8 on normal stuff you can't really tell is there.

The leather in them is very nice, all the creature comforts are awesome, and they've very comfortable to sit in (we plan to buy GX seats for the 4Runner down the road at some point).

The biggest turn-off for me on the Lexus (any Lexus, really) has been the integrated head unit that holds the climate control and all the brains. I want CarPlay, I want to easily be able to adjust the fan as needed (auto climate control works great, but sometimes I want to be in control). The Lexus physically can't do CarPlay, and getting to adjust the fan is three or so clicks on the screen.

The rear barn door, though I thought I'd like it, I was not a fan of. When you open it in person it's huge.

If you are happy with the aspects of the car without any mods, I'd have chosen the Lexus. For us that just didn't fit the bill though and the 4Runner, though not the same class when you compare the build materials and creature comforts, was a better fit for us.
