Can anyone tell me whats up with these two versions of the Firestik Coax cable?

This one doesnt appear to have a ground...

Firestik FireRing CB Coax - 18 Feet [Firestik K4-8R18] - $21.95

This one does....

Firestik CB Coax (Crimped End) - 18 Feet [Firestik K8] - $17.95

I like the non grounded (appearing) one better.... would install a bit cleaner I think. But do i need the ground or whats the story on that? Is the other one grounded in some other way or is it not grounded at all?

a CB antenna with a ground is better. it turns your vehicle into a "ground plane" so signals reflect better.

I'm using a bumper mount made by a forum member.... my understanding of the groundplane was that this effect can only be achieved by mounting it directly to either the roof, hood, etc. using a magnetic mount or drilling directly? Meaning that a wide, flat metallic surface area provides the groundplane.

I appreciate your reply, I didn't think I was going to get any help with this after several days of no responses.

yes, your best performance uses those areas for an optimal ground plane!

but the more metal youre attached to the better. back in the day, people used to also go through the trouble of attaching multiple ground straps from the back of the CB to metal inside of the cabin.

The first has a "fire ring" end on it. It is Firestik's fancy molded end.

The other I just a standard ring terminal, but it also has a ground connection to the cable shield.

If you are using a mount that will have a good ground, go with the Firering cable.

Also look for the one with the mini end and adapter on the radio end. That way you dont need to solder the connected on after you route the cable.
