CB Radio Antenna in Place of OEM AM/FM Antenna???

Hey guys,

On my last wheeling trip, we thought we were slick by buying handheld CB radios ([URL="http://www.amazon.com/Midland-75-822-Channel-CB-Way-Radio/dp/B00000K2YR]Midland 75-822[/URL]) and using the screw-on rubber antenna. Obviously we knew nothing about CB radios!!! LOL, I had to basically be on the bumper of the truck ahead for me to even hear 'em.

So, I've been gettin' my learn on and running through the scenarios: mag mounted on a bumper, blowing a hole through the roof, off the rear quarter, front fender mount, or one of the pre-fab rear antenna brackets...

I literally do not use the AM/FM radio feature on my HU and pretty much get pissed that I have to cycle through that source. So, do you guys see any reason why I couldn't replace the AM/FM antenna with one dedicated to the CB? I'd have to fab up a way to securely mount the antenna base within the fender and see how everything lines up coming out of the fender and through the grommet.

Go for it. The stock setup actually has 2 antennas for am/fm. The other is all those wires in the passenger side cargo glass.

So unplug the main one and remove it for the cb and just run with the rear antenna for radio. You may need an adapter because that plug is smaller. The stock HU has a port for it, but most aftermarket ones dont. Its probably been chilling behind the dash unplugged ever since you put in the new HU. You can look in my build for which adapter you need. Its in the taco whip mod post.

You can buy an adapter to run am/fm through your cb antenna as well so you could still retain a good quality radio signal

Now you got me thinking Doug! I use my AM a lot (love Funny850) so would hate to give that up. I would rather spend my money on a decent CB setup than a new HU, so I think ditching the stock antenna and retrofitting a CB antenna there would be KILLER! I know I saw a post by another member that had put a CB antenna where the OEM power antenna was. Hopefully they will chime in on this post.

You'll probably find that the stock antenna cable would be too short to hook up to a CB antenna in the same spot. Besides, proper cable is cheap and makes a world of difference. There are the splitters which were popular in the 70's, but will cause both you radio and CB performance to suffer greatly.

That's why I want to retrofit a CB antenna where the OEM antenna is, and run a new cable to it. I really prefer a fixed antenna vs the power antenna that comes stock, and if I am going to spend the bucks to do a Taco whip retrofit, I might as well retrofit a CB antenna instead.

What are you going to run it to? Your CB or the Head Unit for AM/FM? I have nothing in the stock location but a hole, and am thinking about what to do with it

Oh, OK. I looked at doing something similar before. There isn't a lot of room in the fender to do much and keep it looking good. Heres what I did with some parts that were kicking around...
I broke down the power antenna and turned it into a fancy fender hole filler. Used a stainless whip (which was my first CB antenna) for my AM/FM and added a Wilson Flex 4 for the CB. Its mounted on a FireStik hood channel mount.

i did this set up with mine all i did was get a fire stick and gutted all the stock am/fm antenna stuff out and got the aluminum antenna mounts for mounting on a mirror or something if yall know what im talking about and took the one side off and got some good self tapping screws and lined it up with the hole on the finder for the stock antenna and it worked out really good most people ask me were my cb antenna is when they see my cb its that clean looking to me and im still getting a good signal its not stupid high just above my roof but its enough

Has anyone had luck on installing the cb antenna, where the original hole is for the stock antenna? Trying to do this myself and want to see how others mounted it inside the fender, what was used, and how it looks.

Slap.a CB antenna in there, get the adapters, and run programmable HAM radio from Baofeng off Amazon for 25 bucks is real piece of mind when your out there
