CB radio that fits in ash tray space?

I have an '01 and the ash tray is broken. I don't need it and am wondering if anyone has found a cb that fits. I found this one but it appears to be like 1/2" too wide.

I just ordered a mag mount and some parts for my K-40 cb antenna and am considering driving the Mojave Road this weekend. Not that the cb will help but you never know. I have a Radio Shack cb i kinda like because you can change channels with the mic.

Unless you have a pressing need to fill that space, consider something like this:

Midland 75-822 CB/WX Radio

I have this one, seems to work pretty well (although it would benefit from a permanently mounted antenna as opposed to the cheapo magnetic antenna I have now.) No installation required, which is nice: Plug the radio into the 12v outlet, plug in the external antenna cable and you're "installed." I hang mine from the rear view mirror or set it on the seat when I'm 'wheeling so it doesn't swing around. As a bonus, you can use this radio as a hand-held, too, it comes with two battery packs (one for rechargeables, one for regular batteries) and a rubber duck antenna.


There's also the Cobra 75wxst, you install the "main" portion of the radio in a hidden location and then just plug in the mike, which has the display and all the controls built in.

Both radios are reasonably priced (under $100) and pretty well regarded in the off-road community.

Yep, Cobra 19 will fit perfectly. And I picked up mine at Wal-Mart for about $35 I think

fits great in the double din space

I have the 1001Z and not sure about in the ash tray spot but will fit great under the aftermarket stereo in the double din slot. You will need the 90 degree antenna adapter for back of the CB.

If you need another radio bezel to have a working ash tray- I have a black one to fit a 99. Make you a deal to get it out of the garage.

Anyway- I still have the stock stereo installed so the ash tray is the best spot for me. No idea where there is a WalMart here in LA but am going to look into those radios you all suggested.

By LA do you mean Louisiana, Los Angeles, or Lower Alabama? There's gotta be a Walmart somewhere dude, they're everywhere!

BTW, I have the Cobra 75 and it fits in the space where your ashtray is...its all in the handheld. I like it a lot!

There is a Walmart in Mornrovia/Duarte off mrytle (SP?) on the 210. Also a 24 hr one in Glendora.

Glad being a former Angeleno has its purpose.

The Midland 75/822 also has all the controls on the mic. Plus it has a cigarette lighter 12v plug so you don't even have to "install" it and you can instantly remove it when you don't need it.

The one GREAT thing about that midland handheld was that it could be modded to get a LOT more than its standard shipped 40 channels or whatever it is....but then they went dry on the market and when they shipped again they changed the ICU and that, unfortunately, can not be done any more

Clifford-Yeah none of us are getting notified about updates to threads. It's definitely a drawback to this forum-one fact we should make the advertisers aware of to get it fixed -so we could buy their stuff.

So if I don't come back to this thread I am not ignoring the answers any of you give, it's just that I have lost track of it... not ignoring any of you intentionally...

It essentially gives you the uppers and lowers (sidebands) - ie three bands of 40 channels each

Is CB dead?

Just wondering what the point of CB is..... I understand that CB on the trail with a group is great. Been there done that. But what about off the trail? Is CB dead ?

Holy sh*t this thread is old.
I tried CB all over- highway- off road- and was clear CB is indeed dead.
And will leave you dead if you are looking for a way to comm in remote areas.

From this forum I was introduced to amateur radio (HAM radio)
I avoided it for a few years just seemed too complicated etc.

In late 2014 I got my Tech class license and Gen class in mid 2015.
I have been VERY active in the hobby and love it.
Get your FCC issued ham lic by taking test via a local group (study using qrz.com account or hamstudy.org or many other ways), buy/learn how to program your radio by hand (relying on software will f*ck you in the field, input the repeaters around the area you will be traveling. Enjoy. I was N of Barstow CA and all over Mojave Preserve in April and was able to talk to N Cal and Los Angeles and Vegas on a single repeater system. I was also able to get email messages out using the lower freqs when stationary and set up for it. Not going to get into that here- deep ass rabbit hole.

Now go start studying for your test!

Interestingly, I have considered ham. I asked someone recently what he knew about ham radio, "It's like Facebook without the internet."

I hate Facebook and do not participate in it so that is not a plus for me. What can you say about ham that would be better than Facebook? Seriously curious about it.
