CBI Dual Swing-Out Rear Bumper Install (Part 1 & 2)

CBI Duel Swingout??? Is this custom or brand new? I was just out on their site, and I didn't even see these options (unless I wasn't looking in the right area). All I saw was the same setup as I have.

It's custom. I knew they make them because a guy I know in my area has one. They mention that they do custom work on their website but I don't think a dual swing-out option is mentioned anywhere. They are working on a new website and maybe the dual swing-out option will be listed for their rear plate and hybrid bumpers.

Their company is growing really fast and they are playing catch-up. I couldn't find install instructions for the swing-outs anywhere online so I had to call the company and ask for help. They sent me a PDF file with pictures of how everything went together which helped out a ton. The dual swing-outs are on my rig along with all the associated additions like a tray table, and a jerry can holder. That video will be out soon. What's awesome is CBI is going to link our videos on their website as a reference for people wanting to do the install themselves. I'm pretty sure they are the first company to do that with our videos. Very Cool!

There are a few reasons one would prefer a dual swing-out...

One that I don't hear mentioned is that with a single arm, all loaded-up, being longer, there is more strain on the various attachment points. It's effectively a lever in a non-desirable way, longer not being good here (Archimedes). A dual swing-out distributes the weight over two shorter arms... I like.

Yeah Fred, people will be happy to have these videos, especially Part 2. We cover everything. We even walk people through how they can wire the license plate light, how they can add a trailer hitch harness and what they need to do if their Toyota converter box is bad like it was on both my 3rd Gens. Because of this though, the video will be pretty long but I think people that like our stuff are use to this by now. They at least know they aren't going to get lost following one of our videos and they can always fast forward through instruction they don't need.

Good to hear Tim (about a week to release Part 2).

I don't like a wishy washy "maybe", so I've refrained from such a response. A house remodel has been consuming me in a major way. All wall texturing done, baseboards in, most of the casings, primed and painted too. That was after much plumbing and electrical work... Going to look at flooring today during my lunch break. Almost done with some tile inlays by the sliding glass doors. Installing a stone shower kit is my last big obstacle. Hope to start next week. If I sense that I can be done by the 19 May, I'll chime-in that thread, and hopefully there will be space still.

Very Impressive! Bet that makes you all warm and fuzzy on the inside. So all in all (and without causing too much of a battle of "mine's bigger then yours") how does their duel swing out compare to Savage?

I have CBI front and rear. I've talked to them about the few faults I've found on their rear and they've fixed them already by the time I talk to them about what I found. So that's a huge plus. I can't see how I can modify my rear to raise it to fit my BL. Even talked to them and they pretty much said, "Good Luck". LOL. I know I'll do a Duel Swing some day and I know i'll upgrade to RotoPax, so until now I thought the only way to go was Savage.

Can't wait to see the rest of your videos and your CBI setup (hinges and such). Is their hinge for their swing outs greaseable now by chance?

On instagram, user davidmudrik had his CBI modified for 1" bodylift. He actually has Ripcords old 4runner but bought it without the rear CBI. Basically, it entails cutting the bottom mounting rails off the CBI and welding the bumper to the frame. It actually looks really good but will limit your ability to remove (if ever needed). Not sure if you are aware of this option. A shop could probably crank this out in a couple hours easy.

No, I didn't think of that as an option for the bumper. I figured If I was going to carry a bike on this rig, I'd just put it on the top or drive my other rig. My 2000 is pretty much all stock and I have a 1UP hitch carrier on that and roof racks. I can fit 3 bikes on the top and 2 on the rear. For biking trips, I plan on using my 2000 mostly. This 98 I'm fixing up is mainly going to be for off-road wheeling trips and such. With the spare tire on one side and a dual jerry can and hi-lift jack holder on the other side, getting a bike hung on there as well would seem pretty weird to me because it would have to stick out pretty far to clear the Jerry can holder.

So, with the aid of a fold-out step stool, I'll just stick to putting any bikes on the roof for this rig.

I don't know anything about the Savage rear bumpers so I wouldn't be able to help you out with comparison with CBI. The hinges use 3 bearings, one on the top with an oil seal and 2 on the bottom. They are sealed bearings and are not greaseable.

Thanks, I'm slowly but surely getting all the stuff I bought onto my rig. it will be nice when it's all on and I can drive a vehicle into the garage again.

For instance, in the bumper install vid I just scrolled forward to make damn sure you had Sonora body mounts going in. You did and I was happy you listened to everyone on this forum that's gone that route.

Your videos are great! Too bad you didn’t have this done a couple years ago when I installed my CBI dual swing, am sure it would have helped. I was missing some odds and ends and the axe/shovel mounts were drilled incorrectly. Got it sorted eventually! Only think I dont like is that the wire supports for the tables prevent sitting anything oversized on the tables...need to come up with a mod to support from below.

Come on now. You mean to tell me you don't watch every one of our videos from beginning to end? This YouTube adventure is definitely a labor of love. It really is a huge time investment when you consider all the steps it takes to get a video completed. Researching a job is the first step which can take some time especially if it's something I haven't done before like working on AC systems. I put a huge amount of time into learning about it before I felt confident I could accurately explain it to an audience and not show something that wasn't safe to do. Then there's the filming which I think pretty much doubles the wrenching time. Finally there's the painful process of editing. At first Sean was doing 100% of the editing because I knew nothing about editing video. But, since I have more free time than Sean (I actually edit lots of video at work when I'm not running calls, training or other duties - perk of being a firefighter) I go through the video first doing all the rough cuts and then Sean takes the project and makes it much better by doing all the fancy stuff he does.
Finally, there's responding to questions and comments that come in.

When people have claimed we're doing this YouTube gig for the money, I just laugh and then set them straight. Yeah, we're making a little money from the ad revenue because we monetize our videos. But, if money was my motivator, I'd just work a 24 hour overtime shift at the fire department. It's a hell of a lot easier and pays much better than making YouTube videos. Our main motivator is we like helping people and like the positive feedback we get from them. I love hearing how much we saved somebody by empowering them to tackle their own automotive work.

I actually didn't know about the Sonoran Steel body mounts. It was my buddy Choy [MENTION=47794]Aznwolf118[/MENTION] who told me about them. Choy was the main dude that inspired me to choose CBI and he is also the reason I knew CBI would make a dual swing-arm because he has one. He actually had them put a ladder on the driver side swing-arm.

People who think others have ulterior motives are usually the ones that have there own ulterior motives. I tend to steer clear of those types.

If you break down the hours you guys put into these and divide by the revenue of the stream I'm sure that figure is well below minimum wage. I sincerely hope one day it is not. People deserve a reward for good things. It's why I always pick up hitchhikers and help guys broken on the trail. Call it karma, kismet, fate or whatever tag you want. I just call it being a good person.

It would be interesting to record how many hours Sean and I put into researching, videoing, editing, and responding to questions and comments on the channel for one month and then dividing our monthly revenue by that number. My guess is it would definitely be way less than minimum wage.

That's cool you help people out like that. I'm the same way and believe in Karma too. I've stopped and helped people on the road side, pushed people off to the side of the road when they're vehicle broke down and given people a ride here and there. When I was in Oregon, above the town of Sisters, my girlfriend and I saw a PCT through hiker looking for a ride to Bend for supplies. So, we moved a bunch a shit around in my rig to make room for him to jump in the back seat. I felt good about helping that dude because I can imagine how he felt being on the trail for months, you're tired, dirty and hungry and waiting around in the hot sun for someone to help you out.
