You try a laser eye cleaner? They don't always work, worth a shot.

My stock CD player would have a hard time reading burned discs once and a while if that's what you're using.

the stock cd players are TERRIBLE.

if the lens cleaner doesnt work, youd do yourself a huge favor by getting an aftermarket headunit. keep the stocker on the side and reinstall it when you get rid of your truck.

an aftermarket headunit alone will change the sound in your truck for the better by leaps and bounds.

that is true. stock cd players does not last long. i bought my 4runner NEW in '97 and it died within '99 or '00. replaced it with Panasonic MP3/WMA headunit. sounds great but speakers getting old also so i need to replace those. i use a dust spray most of the time to get rid of dust inside the cd player. but i recommend buying a new aftermarket headunit. doesn't have to be expensive, up to your budget is fine.

i bought my 01 in september of 03.. the cd player was making these high pitched squeals and was basically malfunctioning by december.

i got a sweet alpine headunit at an amazingly low price, and one thing lead to another... changed out the speakers to match the HU's power... added a sub to improve bass response and remove door rattles...

and here i am with a whole new system. i love the way it sounds.. the 4runner is a great soundbox.. too bad toyota doesnt utilize it and gives us such crappy components.

I fixed my cd player by simply vacuuming the slot where you insert the cd, slowly from left to right and then back again. I hope this works for you as it worked perfectly for me.

You mean to tell me that the OP has been driving around without a CD player for the last 17 1/2 years and all he had to do was vacuum the slot out?

Op last seen in ‘07. Might be a bit late for OP, probably doesn’t have the 4runner or the radio or the CDs anymore.

From my experience the CD player is more reliable than the cassette. Cassette more often than not is broken. These head units are as unreliable as the 4runners are reliable.

I had one CD player spit out discs after failing to find the disc lead-in. Something with the laser diode or the focus was off, but I didn’t investigate since I had 3 other parts radios.

Mine stopped working after getting a jump. And this was the second stock CD player I've had in the car. They just aren't solid.
