CEL - p2759 - Shift Solenoid Valve SLU

Hey guys,

Just got a CEL on my 2006 Toyota 4Runner 4.0L. Had the code scanned at the local AutoZone and got p2759. My research online indicates that this has something to do with the electrical circuit between the ECM and the Shift Solenoid Valve.

It must be one of the following things:

1. Transmission Wire
2. Transmission Wire Harness from ECM
3. ECM
4. Shift Solenoid Valve

However, I can't even find where the shift solenoid valve is located or how much a replacement part costs. I'm not saying that's the problem, but I'm trying to get an idea of how much this repair is going to cost me. The truck is at a local transmission shop getting diagnosed, but I want to make sure they're not taking me for a ride.

Any help is much appreciated!

None whatsoever. Took it to the transmission shop , the guy said he wanted $450 just to open up and "diagnose" the transmission. I walked out of there immediately.

Am I wrong in thinking that modern transmissions are very smart and will basically tell you which part is failing via the error code?

Did autozone clear the code and is the Check light off? If so, has it come back?

If there are no symptoms it may be a fluke, it seems to be a signal issue, not an actual shift valve malfunction, based on your description?

Don't spend $ just yet, see if it recurrs or develops new symptoms.

UPDATE: Took it to a different shop. They said that it is intact the SLU Solenoid. They estimated about $850 to replace the solenoid, but said there is no guarantee that the light won't come back on. They also said when one solenoid goes, there's a good chance another one would go. They said if I wanted the problem fixed permanently, I would need a new transmission.

I'm torn, I love this truck, but with 158,000 miles on it, I don't know if I can justify the cost of a replacement transmission (used or remanufactured.) I just don't know what to do here. I keep thinking, what's next? Head gasket?

A year ago i replaced the radiator, water pump, rear ring and pinion. I don't want to keep throwing money into it. Is it work replacing the transmission?

Well, let's see. You love the truck. Presumably, you would have to repair the vehicle before you would sell it, anyway. I'm not sure why replacing a solenoid would only be a band-aid. $850.00 for a solenoid replacement is expensive, however. A transmission rebuild is around $2k to $2.5k. You say that you currently do not notice any adverse symptoms so far. I am also assuming that your T4R is shifting normally right now, correct? No overheating problems? I only ask as I had a shift solenoid go out on the wife's Acadia and had to have it replaced as it caused her Acadia's transmission to overheat, followed by the engine overheating. Granted, it was under warranty, but nobody said anything about having to replace the entire tranny later, to prevent other solenoids out.

I'd wait for BLACKWORKSinc to comment on your post as he is the resident Toyota service tech here on T4R.org. He would have way more insight than myself.

Thanks for your guys input on this. Yeah, I'm hoping BLACKWORKS offers his expertise on this issue. You're right that I want to get this fixed. Even if I sell it, i would still profit despite the cost of the fix.

Question now is just replace the single solenoid valve, or do I need to replace the whole transmission? I've already replaced Shift Solenoid "B" 2 years ago.

Not entirely true, they are subject to the same fallacies that make diagnosing the vehicle tricky. The DTC is set based on what the module THINKS is wrong, its up to the technician to determine if the module is correct or incorrect in its self-assessment.

An example would be older Honda Automatics (typically the Transaxles coupled to their V6's in things like the Odyssey, Acura MDX, Pilot, ect.) where they set just a P0740 (Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction) and while the DTC indicates that the TCC Lock-Up Solenoid is the issue, in reality is means the transmission is worn out in this particular case. My co-worker and I have dealt with a LOT of them when working on used vehicles and with Extended-Warranty to the point that based on the testing and research alone I can feel confident that 9/10 when an older Honda rolls in with just a P0740 that transmission is done.

As for your particular case, Toyota does not seem to have that particular issue as commonly as Honda does. As for replacing all the solenoids, that may not be an entirely bad idea since it sounds like you already had one give out in the past; but at that point I would overhaul it or get a remanufactuered one with a warranty. You can also go the route of just replacing the solenoid and doing a good clean transmission fluid flush while you're at it.

Its hard to say because you've had issues with another solenoid in the transmission before and that could indicate some sort of premature wear and tear. Though to be honest with you, I'd probably want to just do the solenoid and the fluid flush service. These transmissions have a pretty good reputation and track record so I don't know if rebuilding it this early seems right.

By any chance has this vehicle been used for heavy towing/severe driving most of its life?

HELP! I have Solenoid Issues too!

2006 Toyota 4runner Limited 8 cylinder 4WD 750F auto transmission

Hoping you can help BlackWorksInc

had a couple shifting instances where it seemed like the car didn't want to go into drive after reverse right away, but I didn't think much about it. Also had a couple instances where when on an incline going up at a stop light and then accelerating after a green light, there was beeping and some throttling that happened.

This a.m. I got a check engine light and two VCS light come on. Went to Toyota dealership they said it was a shift solenoid issue and it would cost $900 to replace.

I then went to AutoZone to check what codes were coming up and these were what was coming up:

P2759 - shift solenoid intermittent
Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Control Circuit Electrical

C1201
Engine Control System Malfunction

C1223
Malfunction In Antilock Brake System Control System

C1241
Low Battery Positive Voltage Or Abnormally High Battery Positive Voltage

Toyota said that even tho AutoZone may have found several codes, theirs diagnostic system will tell them what to do first, which could alleviate and be affecting the other codes.

I am a single mom just trying to keep this car for a couple years before I can make some more money and maybe trade it in. and often believe I get taken advantage of at car dealerships and could really use some advice.

Many thanks..

Sorry I missed your post.

Sounds like one of the transmission solenoids is having issues based on the DTCs. You'd probably need a Dealership or a solid Toyota experienced shop to diagnose it properly.
