CEL VSC / Trac turns on and off but error P0441 still there

CEL VSC / Trac turns on and off but error P0441 still there.

The average miles between CEL VSC / Trac on and off is about 36 miles. New factory VSV and chracoal canister.

When the CEL is off, there's still the error code P0441. I've disconnected the battery and the CEL and P0441 disappear.

Another smoke test? Before the charcoal conister was replaced, a smoke test was perform. Nothing was obvious. However, pressurizing did reveal a problem with the canister. Hence, a factory replacement was installed.

What next?

I had a Gen3 years ago that developed an EVAP code I couldn't fix, so I just drove it. Some years later, as I was overfilling the tank to maximize my fuel discount, gas started flowing over the tank and onto the ground. It seems all the years of overfilling took its toll on the filler neck union at the tank. Probably was the cause for my EVAP code for years, but maybe just a tiny air leak at first.

The filler neck looks clean. The O-ring on the cap looks to be in good shape. After locking the cap, I can move it from side to side slightly.

If your gas cap is sealing properly it will have a good bit of resistance when you first start removing the cap until the o-ring seal breaks loose.

I just recently replaced my gas cap with an OEM cap, and when I first tried to remove it I thought it was stuck until I gave it a little more pressure, the old cap turned very easily when removing it, comparing it to the new one you could easily tell the old one wasn't sealing properly, the new OEM cap solved all of my dash warnings lights.

I don't know what the under side of the cap should look like. Here's a couple of pictures. The lose fitting O-ring has a groove around circumference. Is that corrrect?

I had to replace my 06 SR5 V6 cap June-2020.
Dealer was out so I found the exact OEM # ‎77300-33070 avail on Amazon
ZERO problems with this item since installing it 2.5 years ago.
Mine looks different than yours (O-Ring)

in case your wanting to look at it here it is
Amazon.com

As others have said, make sure the filler neck is clean, and free of nicks on the service where cap O-Ring seat.
Always be gentle inserting fuel nozzel in neck to avoid nicking the neck.
Good Luck

That's too bad but you had to prove it out. From the site earlier in the thread, you have to look into the other items. Sadly, it's not always easy to find a mechanic savvy enough to find these issues. So no other codes show up eventually?

"When your Toyota's P0441 is triggered, it usually indicates a bad vacuum switch or a leak in the EVAP system that is preventing fuel vapors from reaching the canister. The P0441 code can also indicate a faulty or "stuck" PCV, a short circuit in the feed circuit, or a faulty purge solenoid.

Generally, when a P0441 code is set, other codes are also present, and these other codes often give a clearer indication of what might be wrong with the EVAP system."

No other codes have appeared. New VSV and charcoal filter unit. And a new gas cap.

Installed the new gas cap (and erased the P0441 code).
19 miles later the CEL came back on with P0441.
4 miles later the CEL turned off but the P0441 was was listed.
5.5 after that the CEL came back on.
The 4Runner sat for 7.5 hours and the CEL turned off.
Code P0441 is still listed.

The PCV is part of the system ?
Where is the purge solenoid valve located?

So my 4runner sat outside for about a week and a half and the battery drained. I jumped it and when i went to start it, the CEL and VAC Trac lights were on. I tried to drive it into the garage, and it would barely move when i pushed the pedal down. Is this a normal thing to iccur after jumping it? Does it not drive when these lights are on? I watched videos about what might fix it, but the gas cap and positive terminal off for a certain time did not clear the codes. Any help?

I checked the video. What I got out of it was to clean the contact surfaces of the cap and seat. Sprayed it with WD40. It's now been 150 miles with no CEL.

Meawhile, checked the VSV.

Pulled off the input hose and didn't feel any vacuum draw.
Checked to insure 12v at the plug.
Connected 9v battery to activate the valve. Still no draw.
Connected a mini-vac to the output of the valve. Without activating the valve it held vacuum.
Connected the 9v battery to activate the valve. Vacuum went to zero.

It must be a very small orfice in the valve.

Still dealing with the CEL on and off between 72 and 125 miles. Mechanic says, "... he can reprogram the EVAC system by increasing the 'calibration window'". Is there a calibration on the EVAC system?

I had a somewhat similar issue with my truck, a Ford F-150, notorious for tricky CEL issues. My truck threw a couple of error codes that seemed to vanish and then reappear randomly, which was both confusing and frustrating. After replacing a part that I thought would fix the problem (much like your charcoal canister situation), the errors persisted.

What really made a difference for me was using jpro software to get a detailed diagnostic of the truck. This software gave me a clearer picture of what was happening. It pinpointed a few underlying issues that weren't obvious at first glance. After addressing those based on the software's detailed report, my truck's issues were finally resolved. It might be worth considering a comprehensive diagnostic tool like jpro to really get to the bottom of your CEL VSC/Trac and P0441 error.

The lastest info is: The Toyota technician attached his scanner/tablet and ran through the system. His conclusion is: The modules in the EVAP system are working. There is a ground problem somewhere.
