I just read a few weeks ago that you can add the center diff lock to non equipt vehicles...I have searched 7 pages in the 4th gen section with no luck..Does anyone remember seeign this thread?

I plugged the switch in, and it works, lights up, locks the center diff and unlock with a loud clunk...but no dash lights...I remember someone taking the time to do a writeup on this but cat find it. Can someone put me on the trail.. thanks in advance.

Not sure what you mean? All 4wd 4th gens have a center diff and a center diff lock button. But you're right when you do lock it the vsc off light should come on and it will mostly disable the traction control. Is that what you mean? You can't just add a center diff lock to things though...like a 2wd or a 3rd/5th gen etc... I'm just not sure what you mean I guess.

I converted my wife's 2003 limited to a 4WD it was 2wd but no longer is....because it was 2wd it did not have the center diff lock.... once I added the button, it works just as it does in my othe r4th gen that was factory 4x4 it just does not turn the light on. I read something about it on here several weeks ago and now I cannot find it. it was a guy in russia or germany that figured out how to add it.... i think...perhaps it was just the VSC off switch he added..I cannot remember.

YUP thats it....it was the Track Off switch...

Darn....

My center diff lock is working, just no light on the dash, and I have no idea what woul happen if my wife were to turn it on and drive down the hwy with the center diff lock on.....will that hurt it?

I wonder if I can jusr add the bulbs and all will work fine.....hmmmmm

I also added the DAC switch there was a plug for it allready in the it did not however work like Iwas hoping.

Please understand, tese are just little things I am trying...we conerted thsi truck to 4wd just over a year ago, the 2wd truck was pre wired for the4wd dialand for the DAC and center diff lock. we made a harness to run from the t-case to the ecu and the rest was all oem parts plug and play... I was hoping to have th esame luck with this....just plug them in and BAM...

I will add the bulbs this weekend and see if it works as it should. I will post back here when I have it in.

Yes never use the center diff lock on dry pavement...you can blow up your transfer case. That's awesome haven't heard anyone doing the conversion but good luck. My guess is the 2wd just doesn't have all the bulbs but knowing if it's locked or not is pretty important...you can tell by trying to turn sharply...you'll notice some binding etc.

right, i can tell by turning sharply.....However I feel my wife may not be able to tell....I just called the dealer for the bulbs and they show nothing.

Definately check for bulbs just in case in the back of the cluster itself. By bringing in one of those to a dealer, it's easier to match up.

Do you know what size bulbs these are behind the dash and other instrument clusters, Im not trying to hijack the thread, I just saw you mentioned what im looking for. I want to replace the orange bulbs with white ones and I don't know what size are in the 4run. 3mm, 4mm or 5mm???

I would just piggyback a light from the switch...just a little led or something to show once switch is pressed it lights up...that way you'll at least know if it's locked or not...slightly ghetto but worth it IMO.

Not off the top of my head. Easiest way to check to to pull the cluster unfortunately and measure.

Update,

I added center diff lock and the only way to get the lights to work was by adding a cluster off of a 4x4. My Limited was 2wd...I converted it to 4wd and just recently added the DAC and the center diff lock.

By putting in the 4wd cluster, I now have all my 4x4 lights including dac and center diff lock. only down side, the new cluster was 23k less miles than my truck, but since we don't plan on selling them, we don't care.

Glad it worked out, just curious where did you get your cluster? I have been wanting to get a limited 4x4 cluster

Got the cluster off ebay....it took a lot of lookign because most people (salvage yards) selling them do not know if they are 4x4 v8 or v6 so you have to check the shift pattern and the 4x4 lights. I put the limited 2wd needles of of my origional guage set on my SR5 T4R. if you dont know to look for it, you would not even notice.
