Center display no longer lights up

Howdy -

I recently pulled my dash apart to change the radio out in my 2005 4Runner, and when I got it back together, I noticed that the center display (where it shows A/C temp, mpg, outside temp, clock, etc) no longer lights up. The buttons on the A/C still light up when the headlights are on, but the display isn't lit, so you can't see it in the dark.

Any ideas what caused this? I pulled it back apart to ensure that I didn't miss anything, but there is only one plug, so it there really isn't a way to mess up the install (although I apparently did something). Anyone know of a fix for this, or do I need to start looking for a whole new unit?

You to had eff with it didn't ya? Bad news is your totalled your rig. Good news is I'm sure you get this post is laced with sacasm. Anyway, this happened to me eons ago and all it was that I unintentionally loosened the bulbs (there are two of them). (Sh) It happens. If not replace them. If that doesnt fix it, take your rig to the junk yard.

Hmm... I looked at the back of it when I had it apart and didn't notice any bulbs, but I'll have to pull it apart again and look at it (radio is jacked up again, so it'll be happening soon). I'll give it a close inspection this time and find those bulbs!! Do you remember if they are screw in, or how they were attached?

See the two bulbs toward the top? Those are the bulbs that light up the LCD display. As you can see, very easy. All you need is a small flat head screwdriver and two bulbs (or just tightened them).

It's definitely the bulbs. The same thing happened to me when I swapped the stock radio. You gotta treat those bulbs like a lady, or they'll stop working...

Anyway, it's a 5 minute fix with a phillips and a flat head. The bulb cost and part numbers are the worst part. My guess is that you had the old bulbs -- they change the connections a bit from the old ones to make them fit nicer as I recall.
 
Try gently tapping around it. Same thing happened to one of my control knobs after I had it apart for my stereo install.
 
Thanks for the updates guys! I'll pull it apart tonight and see if the bulbs can be adjusted. If not, I found some replacements on Amazon. I sure would have these the lights were integrated into the display on this, but I'm glad to find out that they are not!

Pulled it apart and checked the bulbs... they were good and tight. I took them out and it didn't look like they were burned out, but I'm going to order a couple from amazon anyway and check it out. I assume all of those lights are on the same circuit, meaning if one works, they should all have power. Could be coincidence that they both went out when I pulled the unit out, but it's usually not that simple for me.....
 
Wow, great help in here, and specifically timing.. Mine had burnt out only on the side that has the time on it, the side with the cars temp and such still lights up. I assumed it was some kind of complicated LED setup and was going to start junk yard hunting over the next few weeks.

I love this place.
 
They don't look burned out, but trust me they're the issue... I promise you. Just replace them and bite the $6 bullet. It'll save you some silly frustration. Just make sure to order the right part.
 
Mine flicker from time to time since changing the head unit, was wondering what happened. So maybe they're loose!

Yep, been there, done that. They are loose, but if that doesn't cure it, order them and save yourself the hassle. Of course, I no longer have the luxury most of you guys have as I "un-engineered" my backlighting on mine. It's a long story, but it's not over. :biggrin1:

I recall seeing some of that...
 
I changed the bulbs today when I replaced the radio, and voila, the problem is fixed! One of the bulbs was definitely burned out; they must run in series or something because neither of them worked. $12 and two bulbs later and she's good as new!
 
So, next time while you're waiting for bulbs to arrive, to confirm that burnt out bulbs are the problem, just swap them around and see if the problem moves with the bulbs... If they're burnt out, they won't work in any of the sockets and the bulb you moved to the burnt out hole will light up...
 
Is there led bulbs that will work? What size? Half of mine climate control is not lighting up and I would like to replace with whiter led bulbs if possible instead of yellow ones
