Central VA Trails ?.0

I was thinking of going to the Harrisonburg area this weekend 7/30 or perhaps the next depending on weather.
I've camped at Flagpole a few times and there is a trail I have not been on.
Union Spring road.
People I have talked to on the flagpole Fire Road say the the Union Springs trail is more difficult. Thought I might try to find a group on the trail and follow along.

Well I can try and start something up, My runner is repaired so I am more inclined to go now. Definitely want to try and do something when it is a little cooler. Maybe plan for the end of August when it is cooled off? I can start the 5.0 thread if you want.

Sounds like you take the switzer/dunkle hollow road route? or do you go up by the reddish knob entrance? Either way once you go up Union Springs you will love it! Yes it is the most technical route of the three but it is the most fun. Maybe I will make a trip with you after this weekend if you want I havent taken my 4runner out since March I think it is time to stretch its legs a little.

Let me know if you want to do a run next weekend!

Yeah, I came up from the lake once and from Briery Branch another.
Would you recommend going up Union Springs or Down?
I've watched some videos and it looks like there is a part of the trail that has a large shelf to climb right before meeting the Forest Road near Flagpole

Definitely up unless you want to ride brakes alllll the way down. Yes there is a small shelf to go up I have done it multiple times stock. Wont be an issue at all.

I say go ahead and start the thread. It will give people plenty of time to make plans, get off work, get the ok from the wife, etc.

Yeah, I am watching the weather for this weekend and plan to go if its clear.

Last weekend was too much rain. Ended up taking the FJ60 down to Corova Beach.

You thinking about wheeling in GWNF this weekend?

If you guys do Flagpole I will most likely do Flagpole. I can be lead if need be, I head up most of our excursions to Flagpole.

Just me as far as I know. But I would definitely like to do the trip.
I could be up there before noon on SAT.
Looks like there's a chance of T-Storms right now, and clear in the evening.

Let me know if you can make it.

I usually use Dayton, Va for the most accurate weather report. Most of the times it is light precipitation on the mountain and the only spot that can be finicky is that dreaded shelf/ledge everyone fears. It isnt bad at all I have gone up it with rain and snow falling and havent had any issues, otherwise the weather doesnt effect much of the trail at all. I will talk with the wife tonight just to make sure we are all good.

*Just talked to the wife I am good to go for this weekend. You said before noon. when? Our meet up spot is a Shell station at 1010 West Market Street, Harrisonburg 22801. We always meet at 11 there for the main rollout when I do the big groups. It takes me an hour to get to that spot from Charlottesville.

Hey Greg
Thanks again for joining me on SAT.
Had a blast. I finally got to see what the 4th gen and ATRAC can do.
Wish we had someone along for camera work.

I ended up staying at Flagpole and car camping.
Rained a couple times then cleared. It was relaxing.
Normal folks stopped by. Temp was 54 when I got up which was a nice change from the 100 we've had lately.

I will join your run in sept if I can.

I will keep an eye open for your next ride. Will be coming out NC to meet you guys. Went near Blacksburg VA this weekend to see the falls and see if I could find Mtn Lake trail.
