Centrifugal Clunking in Tranny. Only When Decelerating?

Hello all. Maybe I can get some insight, but I think I am looking at a big repair bill regardless. 01' sport 4x4 with 192k started clunking only when braking from 35 mph. I brought it in and the tech said it was running low on fluid and definitely a tranny issue. If its a cracked fly wheel= $900. Otherwise $2500 for a rebuilt tranny. No way to tell unit its cracked open. My question is why the clunking only when decelerating? It is smooth as silk accelerating/merging.

I greased all the zerk fittings after reading some of the forum posts hoping for a miracle, but no such luck.

Is there anything else I can look at or anyone think it could be something else?

What happens if you put it into neutral when slowing down? Might also check your u-joints & transmission mount.

I'm going to try that tomorrow. I guess putting it in neutral will isolate a tranny issue or not? The u-joints were solid, but not sure about the mount. Is there a way to check the mount? Thanks

To me, it's a little strange that you're only having issue on the decel, and that's it. Putting it in neutral will take all the power away, and you won't be relying on the transmission as your brake. The transmission mount is bit further of a stretch, but still something to look. Just look at the bushing on mount, and see how deteriorated it is.

Yeah, the noise is coming from under my passenger seat or there abouts. The tech had it for a couple hours as said definitely trannsmission

Well, I was able to drive today and put it in neutral while braking and I still heard the sound. Does that mean that maybe the tranny is not the culprit?

Technically your transmission is not engaged at that point, and I woundn't think it's the issue. Others might want to chime in on that though. If it were me, I'd start looking at your drive shafts, and inspecting your u-joints.

Just wanted to give an update. Got the whole family in the truck today with all the windows down and we were able to determine the sound is coming from the rear brakes!! Or that area. Tech spent 2 hours with the truck and said definitely tranny! Christ, that is why I always come to the T4R forums. You guys rock! Gonna have to pull the rear wheels to check the drums. I am just ecstatic I won't have to pay for a new tranny. (hopefully) . Thanks again for the imput:humble:
