change your interior color

Hey guys this started with some small cheap mod that i did but thought id post a how to for those that may want to do this, it turend out pretty cool IMO

I used dupicolor fabric dye for the process. (you will need 2 cans of this) My original plans were to reupholster the door panels myself but i didn't have the proper equipment to do a legit job so... the next best thing

now im not sure if i did it wrong, i did kind of rush it and the materal became very crusty after it dried, So i took a steamer and steamed the fabric along with wiping it pretty hard with a poleyster cloth. (i used some old basket ball shorts) you can use silk or similar material to get it to your liking as far as softness currently mine is still stiffer than the original fabric but it feel like a modern newer materal now.

first thing you want to do obviously is take your door pannels off. to do this you first pull your arm rest off. just grab it from the bottom and pull it should pop right out
also there is a screw in the door handle that you can remove as well. slide the backing of the door handle towards the right and it should come loose

next you will see 2 bolts behind the armrest

after that all you have are a couple of those plastic plugs that you need to take out. to get them out push in on the little button in the middle there are 2 on each door, one on the inside and one on the outside part of the door

now your door panel is ready to come out. i found a gap at the bottom of my door where i just pulled and then you just work your way around the door
012-1.jpg~original

now you should be able to slide the door off

you will have to feed the handle through and disconnect the window switch.

you will most likely want to take the door handle off. to do this there is a clip on the back of the handle that you can slightly grab with some needle nose and then stick a pin or pick in the gap to feed it off of the metal arm

now you just mask everything off do a good job on this part! i missed a couple spots nothing that goo gone cant fix but here is what i did

and then paint

do light coats and space them out. it think i did mine too quick but yeah it will take 2 cans to get rid of a light color

I still dont have them installed, im waiting on the door handles to dry for these i used a primer. I was worried about an adhesive promoter making the handles sticky so i used 2 coats of primer 3 coats of dupiclor trim, and 2 coats of clear along with 2 coats of anther clear sealant type of stuff

to paint these what i did was tape open the handle so i could get underneath first, let it sit over night and then shoot the top.

I did this and did a little write up about it a few years ago. The color is still holding up and looks decent. Yours looks good too!

I'm going to call BS on this mod.

Not because it can't be done,

but because of this:

nice man we should get together and go weelin sometime! what brought you to utah? Im from Norhtern Nevada, Reno, Tahoe (general area)

ok guys so its snowing and i just washed my truck, (figures) so i dont want to take it out and snap any good pics so here is what i have so far

One thing that i noticed that sucks about this is black attracts dirt like no other obviously. this black material is like a super magnet for everything! i tried cleanig it with water and a soft cloth, i tried a lint brush and it seemed to get worse :ybrick: im seem to be good and messing up a perectly good project dah

anywahy i like it much better then the tan stuff. it feels like new fabric and IMO its good enough! i think they go good with the floormats?

The change looks good dude. If the weather ever actually gets to spring, we can get some other local Runners together, and go somewhere. Woot!

Remember the Runner is the wifes. She's really wantin me to get my own. I'm torn between getting another 3rdgen or an IS300. :toilet3:

thats right i remember now haha, you were going to UVU right? are you going this semester?

it sounds like you should get an IS300 so your wife wont mind lending you the runner. thats a fun car to drive im sure she would enjoy it!

yeah it really neeeds to get to spring soon. I was so happy to finally wash my truck and here it freaking snows again!

Wife doesn't like "cars"

I would NEVER go to UVU or any other institute of higher learning in Utah county. At least until they add "driving" to the base curriculum.

I'm sofa king torn on picking between IS300 and 4Runner. I had a 92 that I really dug, but I killed it on accident. Turned out it was only in a slight coma, but I sold it. :(

i fixed all the streaks, its kind of silly but i just bought some charcoal from the art store and now they look clean! it doesn't rub off or anything so all is well! ill get some pics soon

haha dont even get me started with the way people drive over here... i swear they get in their cars close their eyes and hope for the best... i dont blame you one bit man.

I think you might be getting him and I confused.... Unless there's another guy on here with a 4runner that goes to UVU.
lol too many to rememeber sorry man! are you going this semester?

Man I could tell you some stories.

Just yesterday, I'm on Redwood Rd. At an intersection. Light red.

Light turns green, both directions. Oncoming Honduh Oddity decides to just, you know....turn left, in front of me. I lay on my horn, she looks EVERYWHERE ELSE EXCEPT in front of her..... When she finally sees that there is a car about to hit her, she's in the middle of the intersection. I tell her she's #1 and her daughter (18ish) who I would have hit, mouths off "F*CK YOU C**KSUCKER!"

Wait a sec.....your idiot mother has 2 lanes of oncoming traffic about hit her, and I am the bad guy??

haha gosh man the story sounds too familiar. WTF is an 18 year old cussing you out for she's got no experience driving! Ive heard rumors that the drivers test here is open book for EVERYONE. so that would explain why so many people dont know what a blinker is, you can do what ever the hell you want the other person will stop for you, and the list can go on haha

not to pull away from the thread but the other day while i was at school i saw two people backing up at the same out of their parking space. they were directly behind eachother and both kept backing up until they hit each other. I laughed so had almost wet myself. i mean geez! how does that happen?

Dang, i was hoping the black was darker once it dried and all since i wanted to go full black interior... looks like fabric will prob stay grey.

yeah they would of stayed a dark black but i couldn't stand the feeling of sand paper on my doors so the smoothing process took some of the darkness away. in reality i think i put the coats on too close together which gave the crustiness.

however; the pics still make them look lighter than they are. I really need to get a good camera to where i can adjust the aperture so it can show true detail. they are about the same color as my TRD floor mats. its like a charcoal black now not a deep black like in the 1st stages.

If the sun ever comes out again over here ill get some better pics. IMO it looks tons better then the tan stuff.

Ok, ya i may just end up trying it when i have some free time and see wat happens... ya i am not a fan of tan and was glad my 4runner had the grey in it but lately its been looking to be like it makes the interior look aged.

haha thats exactly what i though. thats the perfect word for it too. and just a heads up i think the grey will work better cause its darker (im asuming) but it took me 2 full cans to get it completely dark. so yeah it takes a while. but it definitly makes it look like a newer material.

the paint fumes go away after a while too lol good luck man!
