Changed rear diff fluid today

Today I hit 29k thousand miles on my 4Runner. I decided to change my rear diff fluid at 29k miles. My 21 Tacoma rear diff went out at 8k so I decided to change my 4Runner as a precaution. My question is should I wait until 50k to change the transfer case and front diff since I hardly put it in 4 wheel drive? I used 75w90 gl5.

I'm doing everything at 50K including the transmission.

I don't have a 4R yet - but owned a 2013 FJ Cruiser from new until 2021. The FJ's owners manual said to run 4WD for a few (10?) miles every month. I did this maybe 8 months of the year. I did not offroad much.

Does the 4R require the same?

Yes I believe all Toyota 4wds recommend this but it's just good practice to exercise your 4wd. Just find a straight road.

My FJ manual stated the same as both of my T4R's............... once a month for 10 miles.

Interesting your rear diff went out at 8k on your taco; I changed my rear diff fluid on my 2019 4R at 3k and it was under filled from factory. Lots of metal shavings and the fluid was shot. I would defiantly change the T-case and front diff.

I did both diffs and t-case at 25k on a 2019.

Truck saw consistent 4WD usage in that interval.

Rear diff fluid was similar to OP in color, no metal shavings.

Front diff and t-case were honey gold still.

I did not send the rear oil out for analysis but judging by the color alone, it needed to be changed. I would not say my truck sees severe usage but there are months at a time I am in 4WD or on dirt. Another note, I have no breather extension on the rear, had a few deeper crossings but noticed no water contamination when draining.

Yes. I go 50K on both differentials and transfer case using Mobil Delvac Synthetic 75w90. 306K miles on the truck.

Good info. Just hit 35K on my 2018 and this is on my to do list. Been getting reminders from the dealership to do all 3 and an injector service for a total of $500..I think I'll be doing it myself..

on my 17 TRDP, i did both front and rear diffs at 15k miles, now just about at 45k miles and will both diffs, transfer case and trans now.

brake fluid i also do every 2 years regardless of miles

but one other fluid people always for get about is doing the power steering fluid which gets very dirty and is overlooked. Valvoline MAXLIFE atf is a good choice for PS fluid

I'm a big fan of changing the diff and trans fluids more often than recommended. I like Amsoil in the diffs, but have used Valvoline in my SxS and it's made that rattling drivetrain nice and quiet.

I did my front & rear diffs along with the transfer case last weekend at 50,000km. The transfer case fluid was still golden looking. The front and rear diff looked similar to what is pictured above by Sgb020. I used Redline 75W85 for the diffs and Redline MT-LV for the transfer case.

Swapped out my diff fluid at 150k, I don't think the previous owners ever did that. Came out real dirty and smelled horrible, thankfully it didn't have any metal shavings.
