Changing Auto Door Lock/Unlock Settings

I bought a 2011 4Runner Limited a couple weeks ago and I'm still working my way through the owner's manual. Last night I found a section that indicates we can customize the auto door lock/unlock settings. The default setting locks all doors when the transmission is shifted out of Park. It also unlocks all doors when the transmission returns to the Park setting. I'm okay with all doors locking when I shift out of Park; however, I'm not sure I like the idea of all doors unlocking when the vehicle is placed in Park. I've tried changing the setting by following the instructions in the owner's manual, but the settings don't change. Has anyone tried making this change and were you successful? If all else fails, I can take the vehicle back to the dealer, but this looks like this should be a simple adjustment.

+1. Also, I want to change mine so that it does not lock the car until I go over 5mph, which I heard was possible, but I don't know how to do it...does the dealer have to set that?? Every time I back out of the garge, it locks, which I don't need until I leave the driveway.

According to the information in the owner's manual this is something we should be able to change at the "user level". No luck in making the change following the instructions. Maybe I'm just "challenged".
 
I had these and other settings -- including opening the windows from the keyless remote, door lock after ~10mph, door stays locked when shifted to park, windows open & close with key in door, disabled seatbelt chime (i carry weight in the pass. seat sometimes), disabled keyless lock chirp -- done by the dealer with the Techstream. They did it free as a courtesy a few days after I bought my '11.
 
I had a bunch of settings changed at the dealer too for free. I know it was mentioned that you should be able to change the lock and unlock without going to the dealer, but don't think anyone has figured it out yet. Here are a few past threads worth checking out.

There is a more detailed version of what can be programmed by the dealer, it's the first post my Nashman in the first link. The fifth post down. I printed that, highlighted what I wanted changed, took it to the dealer and the tech changed almost everything using the tech-stream software. A few things that are printed on that page, weren't available for my 4Runner, might only be available if you have a Limited with the Smart Key, IDK for sure.

I went nuts trying to change the settings, but I finally managed to turn all of the auto settings off. I actually did not mind the locks locking when I got above a few MPH, but the option for having all of the locks open up when you shift into park seems kinda strange to me.

Anyway, I can lock and unlok my own doors, so I disabled everything.

After much frustration, I learned that everything will work if you hold the switches in their position for exactly five seconds (or darn close to five seconds). "Counting off" the five seconds will not be close enough for the computer. Use a watch and everything should work out.

Let us know how it goes!

With all the customzation that is possible, I really wish you could just plug a computer into the car, bring up a menu, and turn everything on or off as needed. I know the dealers can do it, but we should be able to do it also! hopefully, there would be a "reset" button for when we screwed everything up!!

Shamish, thanks for the great tip! I pulled out my trusty I-Phone stop watch this afternoon and gave your recommendation a try......it worked like a charm. I was able to make all the adjustments to the lock settings and everything is working the way I want. I was using the old "one thousand one, one thousand two......" method to measure timing. Obviously that isn't good enough. The owner's manual sure doesn't make it seem like a big deal.....the manual says to hold the buttons for "approximately" 5 seconds. Apparently they needed to say hold for "exactly" 5 seconds.

Brought mine to the dealer yesterday for my 5000 mile free service and I also chnaged the oil (had to pay for that). My dealer change the unlock feature for me so now when I grab the driverside handle they all unlock and not just the d/s door. I also had them program the key for all windows down, and that seatbelt chime to be turned off (they did this all for free also)
 
I have TE with the "normal" key fob. Can that be programmed to roll down the rear cargo window like you could do in the 4th gens?

Yes, but has to be done at the dealer. Check out the owner's manual for the full list of custom changes.

actually, no, it can't. the "normal/non-smart" key can only be programmed to roll down all the windows except the rear cargo. i'd love to be wrong b/c that was such a handy feature on the 4G.
 
You rock. I thought I was challenged also.. after reading this I took my stopwatch out and updated the doors to NOT unlock when putting into park. As a woman, that is a safety issue I think to default to unlock. Exactly 5 seconds is the key for sure. Thank you so much!!

Weird one...

I have a 2014 Limited. The fob works 100% for unlocking and locking all doors. The touch sensitive door handles both work for unlocking all the locks, but neither work for locking the doors. They both worked up until last week. Not sure what changed or how to get it back?

Full disclosure... I changed a driver door actuator about a month ago, but the locks worked fine the past few weeks.
 
I too don't like the idea of the doors unlocking when shifted to park. The 4Runner is my wife's and is the primary transportation for my kids. Id like the doors to stay locked after parking until she is ready to exit. Im sure the answer is in the manual, but I'm at work...What is the alternative to having it unlock when shifted to park? Just unlock using the door switch? Or can it be when the key is turned to the off position?
 
Have you guys tried Carista?

It's a little obd2 fob that sticks on there and you use an app on your phone to change all this stuff. beeps, locks, auto windows, everything. Works good on my 2020 TRD ORP. also works on my sons 16 Pro and my Murano for that matter.

cost about $60 all together with the fob and the "pay for use" app. but well worth it to change all the stuff yourself.
