Changing out fuel pressure regulator on a '99 2.7L

Has anyone accomplished this or have any pointers on doing so? Is it just a matter of swapping it out?

I'm doing this because I believe this is what is causing the strong smell of gas emitting from my engine bay.

Isn't the FPR located near the power steering pump? I cannot remember. Maybe COB or someone else will chime in.

Do you smell gas coming out of the vacuum line?

It should be to remove the vacuum line and the fuel return line, take off the two screws, pull off the old one, install the new one (coating the new o-ring with gas) in reverse and tighten the screws to 80 in/lbs I believe.

To relieve fuel pressure, I just leave the gas cap off the night before I do any work on my 4runner the next day and disconnect the battery.

I'm having a hard time trying to narrow down where the gas smell is coming from.

The truck was at the dealer a few months ago for a fuel related issue where I lost a TON of gas from the line that plugs into the FPR. I think they just replaced that one small section. Though, they took my driver-side running board off so they must have replaced that line as well?

I think the FPR is the original. It's a Denso.

UPDATE:

I found the source from where gas seems to be leaking from:

Looking at my notes from the dealership, my receipt says: "Replaced return hose from rail to line." And they used 90445-12290 (hose) & 96135-5110 (clip, hose)

I'd move that lower hose clamp down a bit further by where it meets the metal line. You might not be getting a great seal.

INTERESTINGLY enough, i really only notice the gas smell about 5 minutes after i cut the engine off. i was tinkering around this evening and was determined to find out where exactly the gas was coming from. sure enough, it was coming out of both ends of the hose (in between the rail and the line), which is what the dealership replaced a few weeks back. i called my service writer at the dealership (good call LittleCaesar :thumb3 and he told me that the part and service is under warranty and that all i have to do now is bring it back. uuugh. and i just paid $25 for a new/used OEM fuel pressure regulator. :ybrick: Oh well, I guess it can't hurt to change it out. Besides, I got a great deal on it so it's not like i'm out $100.

I waited on it for about an hour only to have them change out the clamp. When I get home, guess what...gas is STILL seeping from the hose and clamp that they originally replaced. :bash:

Any suggestions? Call the dealership back?! The parts/labor are under warranty still I'm assuming if I just went this morning and they did it for free.

Drive back and be an ass if you have to, such as "I need to speak to the general manager now" if the service manager cannot rectify the problem.

With as old as our 4runners are, they don't usually garner the top tier tech's attention when taken to the dealer, sadly to say.

I completely agree. I even heard the SVC writer refer to my 4runner as "something this old" so i know that's the mentality they have.

Say they were to find another fuel related issue that they didn't find the first time and end up charging me for it (even though I brought it back because of something they replaced). Am I expected to pay for it?

Just went out and replaced my fuel pressure regulator. I'll update...

So, the good news is after changing out the fuel pressure regulator, it looks like the leak from that hose that the dealership replaced has ceased and desist...ed. The BAD news is...I'm still smelling gas. I located the fuel filter, underneath the intake manifold and this is what it looks like:


Could this be my problem?

That appears to be the starter. The fuel smell will linger for a few days, maybe give it some time before you go bonzai on it.
