Changing Plugs

I have a 97 6cyl with 150k miles and was just quoted $160 to change the plugs. How difficult is that to do on a 4Runner? I am not that handy with cars, but know how to set a gap (or whatever its called) and change plugs on motorcycles. Is it any different on a 4 Runner?

Do it yourself. All you need is a ratchet, the right sockets, and some extensions to reach a few of the plugs. Check it out and you'll see how easy it is

its easy. Get a couple medium length extensions, a 5/8" swivel spark plug socket and a rachet. Only use denso or ngk dual electrode plugs. Denso part # K16TR-11. Dont forget to use anti seize on the plug threads

Do you have to worry about setting the gap. Also, do you recommend changing the spark plug wires as well? Probably never changed. If so is that difficult? I don't think they have ever been replaced. 150k miles.

no. the gap is preset. You can do the wires if you want. I have the same amount of miles on my 97 and have never changed the wires. Its up to you. I think people change wiresmore than they need to. If they arnt failing there is no need. They wont give the truck more power or mileage by changing out working wires

I followed a tip on some forum or other to use a short length of fuel hose to insert the new plug into the cylinder plug hole and make the first few turns. The 'feel' of whether you are correctly threaded is much better than with the plug wrench and thus reduces the danger of cross-threading that soft aluminum head.
