When i bought my '03 Sport it came with the silver trim package on the grill, door handles, roof rack and rear hatch garnish. I have enjoyed it, but have grown a little tired it over the last 9 years. I had thought about painting them black with Plasti-Dip, but knew that i wanted make it a more permanent change. I had priced out the handles, grill and rear hatch pieces from Toyota already painted black......those would have cost over $600.....not going to happen. Since my wife decided to take our 4 year old twins out of town for a few days, i figured it was meant to be. I decided to just go ahead and pull the handles, grill and rear hatch piece and shoot them black. My only option was rattle can, so i was a little nervous about the outcome. I was very pleased with the results.
I used a Scotchbrite pad to scuff most of the pieces. On the grill, i used 600 grit to smooth out a couple of little rock dings. After sanding them down i wiped them all with alcohol to remove any sanding dust and oil from my fingers. I then used Duplicolor Primer/Filler spray to apply 2 coats. I let them dry about 20 minutes between coats and let the second coat dry for about 30 or 40 minutes. I then lightly sanded the surface of the primer and wiped them down again. Next step was shooting the color match black from Duplicolor. I applied 3 or 4 light coats on all the pieces, waiting 20 to 30 minutes between coats. After letting those pieces sit over night i started shooting 3 or 4 coats of the final Duplicolor Clear Coat. I let the clear coat set up for several hours before moving on. When you shoot the clear coat, it will really bring out the "orange peel" (looking bumpy). For the next step i wet sanded all the pieces with 1000 grit. This smoothed out the orange peel. After this process i polished and sealed all the pieces before mounting up. I was pretty proud of the results i got from the Duplicolor rattle cans. The main thing is just to take your time. Rushing it would have given me the results i was afraid of. As far as the rack, i had decided that i didn't want to try and paint it, because i use it a good bit. I didn't think it would hold. I have also been a fan of the Urban Runner racks, with the round bars, so i bit the bullet and ordered one of those. Since it is black it was perfect.....now for some pics.

I also have a set of step tubes coming this week, from an '06. They are grey, but will soon be black. A huge thanks to "Roll tide" for those steps. Can't wait to get them on. I also need to give "Trevloc" credit for his write ups and videos on removing different parts. That was a huge help. And of course "Gaterose" for all the banter texts back and forth.....lol.....:cheers:
