i had to replace mine but it never worked. my check engine light is still on!! AND i replaced my gas cap too....

basically its pretty straight forward... undo all the screws.. 4 total. 12/14 i believe

the hardest part was pulling the hoses off the lines...

Double check all the vacuum lines in your engine bay. I (carefully) pressure washed my engine after wheeling to get the mud off it and ended up knocking a little 2inch J shaped line off its connection. Never even noticed since the hose was still "in place" just slipped off its nipple. The check light didn't come on till two days later so I never figured it was from the pressure washer. When it did I was getting p401 p402 p406 I belive. Had it pulled as all charcoal canister codes. Turns out it was something vacuum and egr related just under the driver wiper bolted to the firewall.

The 96-00 charcoal canisters are different than the 01-02. In 01 the canister had a redesign and was moved from the engine bay to a mount underneath the
Spare tire carrier.

A couple years ago I was was getting p0446. I finally replaced my canister with a 97 used canister with ~160 on it. The code went away and has not come back but I swear that my milage dropped.

anyone recommend where i should buy one? new or used i found one on car parts.com for 100 bucks and rock auto for 367.00

bumping an old thread

I bought an 01 4runner to swap the engine into my 1st gen. The truck was hit in the back where the evap canister is. So i have the check engine light on plus the vsc lights and the accompanying codes.

My question is when i do my swap can i swap in an older style evap system from 97-2000?

Removing Charcoal Canister

Bump.

Hi all. I recently bought a used '05 4Runner and I'm unable to fill up the gas tank all the way. It stops halfway. I'd like to remove the charcoal canister to take a look at it and possibly clean it out if it's clogged, but I'm really new at all this and can't find a solid tutorial regarding how to remove it.

Any advice?
