Cheap Diff Lock Options

Locker

I went through this same thought process and decided for the amount of money and effort needed to do the E locker retrofit an ARB locker made more sense. All said and done you might spend a little more with the ARB, but I feel it is one of the more robust designs out there. The fact that I have a V8 and don't plan to regear also influenced this. Not to mention once your done you'll have on board air as well. The only way the retro is significantly cheaper is if you can find a good used 3rd member with actuator and can do all the work yourself.

i managed to be done with my retro for less than the cost of buying the ARB so it made sense for me. but for guys spending >300-350 bucks for the 3rd + actuator and then having to rebuild/ gear it the ARB would probably make more sense for them. im just glad LowRangeoffroad has all the little bits and pieces to make it much easier to do.

Something you can't do if you go with the ARB is sell your old 3rd. Buy a used 3rd with actuator for $400 and sell your stock 3rd for $150-200 means I'm only out $250! As long as I don't keep my original 3rd for spare parts or something.

FYI, the Tacoma clamshell uses a needle bearing on the drivers side where the v8 4Runner used a bronze bushing. The needle bearing is not sufficient to support the cv and the spider gear, especially after a lift. A lot of the taco guys had trouble out of them.

However, it's and easy fix. Ecgs sells a bushing you can hammer in. They also sell a puller tool if you don't have an internal bearing puller.

not much you can use for spare parts off the stock third once you do the retro fit. the stock 3rd wont really fit that well or bolt in on pretty much the entire driver side, plus the driver side carrier bearings are different. but i do need to throw my stock 3rd up for sell on craigslist and my clubs FB page. get some more money towards my regear.

Already has 3.73 gears and $200 of install accessories I would probably need anyway.

Does anybody know, would I have to take a complete 3rd to a shop to have installed with the gear alignment, or could I do it myself?
