I don't understand the reasoning here. Are you afraid to damage the wheels because they look too nice? Why not just keep them and wheel with them until they get beat up and buy a new set years down the road?

If not - OP - don't do this. There's no way 15" wheels will fit unless you space them out to equivalent of around 2" backspacing. Even then - probably not. And if you do - the geometry in the front is all wrong. They'll rub horribly even with stock tires size due to the scrub radius. And using a 6 to 5 lug adapters are two piece assemblies (per hub) that cost more than a decent set of wheels. Basically this is all wrong on every level. If it's not a joke - I hope you can return them easily or find someone local who wants them. They're not going to work.

and feel like 5-lug wheels + cost of adapters can't be less expensive than 6-lug wheels

Ain't that the truth my $4300 later on just wheels for my g35, my method NV's cost me $700.
Why put cheap steel wheels on a truck that cost $40k? I can see a beater crawler sure. These trucks are already EXTREMELY picky with tire balance now, I don't even want to imagine the steering wheel shake with a set of steelies that got bent and bashed back into place with a hammer. I doubt anyone who hillbilly straightens a wheel checks the run out or straightness.
Weight wise doubt there's a difference between steel and alloys my methods are pretty heavy. Weight to strength ratio there's a difference the lip is damn near 3/4" thick on my methods the only part I can even imagine bending is the inside barrel lip. I've aired my tires down to 10 psi in the rocks and have yet to tap my wheel. A couple gouges sure

^ the issue with alloys is not about bending, it's that instead of bending they will crack
my point is that i don't see the typical daily driver/offroader hitting something offroad hard enough to crack a factory allow. i've cracked alloy wheels on cars, but it was always nailing a pothole at speed with low profile tires and that is not applicable to the 4runner.
if you hit an alloy hard enough it will crack while a steel wheel will bend. for how most of us are probably using our 4runners the alloys are actually better because with medium impacts the steel wheel will bend but the alloy won't do anything.
there are probably a few people wheeling hard enough for it to be an issue, but i feel like anyone who has to ask about this isn't in that category.

That's the wheel I have. They rubbed on the front bumper with stock sized KO2 back when I was lifted 1.5".
No doubt. We've all been there, but hopefully he'll realize that he needs to reevaluate that decision before he endangers himself. Once you start getting overly complicated on putting wheels on a vehicle, you're asking for trouble.

When I was 16 I had Bronze Rota (knock off Mugen wheels) on a black civic Si with full koni/ground control suspension and put a turbo kit on it the following year. I definitely went a different route than most of my friends at school with big wings and neon lights. They always made fun of my car for being boring to look at.
Yes, but did you use motorcycle wheels mounted on adapters riveted on to your Honda Civic hubs? THAT'S the right way to do it!

I spent $150 for FIVE FJ aluminum wheels on the FJ Forum. They were cheap because they were (OMG) SCRATCHED. I put my 255/80 KM2's (33") on them, and they are my off-roading set. I can change them out pretty fast. The first time out with my girls in Sedona, I put a NASTY gouge in one. My girls were all sad, thought I would be upset. I simply said "That's why I bought them!". BTW, I keep a fifth KM2 as my spare. I would rather have the "right" spare off-road, than on.

By that mentality why wheel a $40k truck? Steel wheels used to ship with old and new gen FJ's...
They aren't that picky, you can hobble home just like anything else. If it gets you 200 miles to where you need to be, no issue.
I don't think the OP considers $700 for a set of Methods cheap (let alone $4300 for a set of wheels). You have people of all income ranges buying 4runners. I personally try to consider the context in which to respond. OP was talking about cheap wheels, if he doesn't find a set of take off OEM's, you think a cheap cast bling rim is going to work? Maybe, I guess, probably look cool though...

The FJ Cruiser came with steel wheels in the lowest cost “build your own” trim. They chose steel because it was the cheapest... not the best. Fun fact, the TRD Pro trucks ship from the assembly plant to the port with steel wheels. The wheels and tires are scrapped when the vehicles are fitted with the Pro wheels and tires.
