I had the front 2 end caps break over 6 months ago. They were just brittle and broke when anything touched them. I was going to buy OEM parts but the back left broke when I was washing the roof. 2 OEM end caps were hard enough to swallow so when the third broke it justified trying $39 dollar third party non-oem / aftermarket parts even it they failed.
So far so good. A lot of advice is given here for removing old ones so they don't break but I don't think anything would work once they become as brittle as mine. I purchased the "itrims" brand from amazon. They have smaller tabs on one side than OEM. They look just like the originals but felt a little thinner. I had to put the smaller side into the slots first then position them and pop them down with my palm. I pushed and pulled pretty dang hard after installation and they didn't budge. I did a trip to Orlando and spent some time at 65mph and nothing rattled or flew off. Now keep in mind this is Florida, so no extreme cold to test them with. As far as I can tell they are well worth $39 and unless something changes they should last a while.
The biggest problem during the install was the black rubber/plastic seal under the rack foot is deteriorating. Any time I touched it especially with anything wet black was smeared everywhere including on me.
