Check Engine Light - Transmission Problem

Hey guys,

My CEL Light came on yesterday, along with the VSC Trac lights. I have a 2006 4Runner V6 with about 124,000 miles on it. I took it to Autozone and the code that came up was:

P2714 - Pressure Control Solenoid "D" Performance or Stuck Off

I noticed a while back car was also lurching forward when accelerating, after a sudden stop. I initially thought this was the driveshaft lubrication issue, but after plenty of grease, the problem was still there. I took it to the dealer back then, but there was no check engine light, and they said that there were no transmission codes, and everything looks good.

Doing some research, it looks like this code is related to one of the transmission solenoids. Does anyone know anything more about this problem? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

My biggest fear is that I'm gonna need a new transmission, something I really can't afford right now.

Please help!!

Have you called a Toyota dealer and ascked the service rep. about the code you got? They might have had others with the same code or should be able to tell you whats up.

An excerpt from the repair manual regarding the P2714 code that you have, mostly what it is and how the ECM determines to set the MIL.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The ECM calculates the amount of heat absorbed by the friction material based on the difference in revolution (clutch slippage) between the turbine and output shaft. The ECM turns on the MIL and outputs this DTC when the amount of heat absorption exceeds the specified value.

When the shift solenoid valve SLT remains on, oil pressure goes down and clutch engagement force decreases.

NOTICE:
If you continue driving under these conditions, the clutch will burn out and the vehicle will no longer be drivable.

I would reccomend that you no longer drive the vehicle and have it serviced as soon as possible, could be the solenoid giving out or something else. but it will cause the transmission clutches to slip and can end up burning out your transmission which is far more expensive.

Good luck.

Thank you so much! I'm driving it today, but only straight to the dealer. I hope it's only the solenoid or something simple that needs replacing. I'll keep you updated!

Thanks!

looks like it! I checked the solenoid in the transmission and they work fine. Changed the fluid and adjusted the level, reset the ECU. It feels like the transmission is slipping. So the next step if I look at the Toyota documentation is : Change transmission :sniper:

I gotta say I'm a bit disappointed, I've done this many many times with many other cars without any problem. It's only been a month and a half that I bought the car, and I'm afraid this is gonna cost big box. I guess :happens:

Sounds like the previous owner was probably pretty reckless to the transmission.

These transmissions are very reliable. It was a strong selling point when I was researching to buy mine. There is some angst at the "lifetime" fluid, but much of that has faded. The reliability reports/data for the engine/tranny in the 4th gens far exceeds practically any other brand.

Anyway. That sucks. Lets hope it is a simple fix.. but it could be the product of the previous owner liking to show boat it a bit too much.

Ti-Ben, how many miles on your 4R? I'll be shocked if that transmission is toast, but it's possible. I've spent many years on the Land Cruiser forum, the 100-series uses the same transmission with few problems. There have been some failures on early transmissions (late '90s), but an '08 pushing much less weight should not be having problems. Some of the Land Cruiser guys do serious off-roading with theirs, so a little "show-boating" shouldn't be enough to break it. Keep us posted please.

Can anyone chime in on resolution? This started out as a drive shaft clunk. Then the shifting issues started occurring. Back then simply turning the car off/on would make it return to normal driving. I drive easy most of the time so its rare I get a clunk. The past two times I've tried to manually create the drive shaft for demonstrating to mechanically inclined friends the check engine light comes on. Turning the car off/on doesn't fix it the shifting anymore. I have to disconnect battery for 10-15 minutes and all is well. Normal driving for a week this past week, no shifting issues. Today i got a small clunk and decided to try and determine what the code was on the CEL. It took a few hard stops and clunking then I get check engine light: P2714.

I saw this on another website:
"The most common cause for the code is a stuck solenoid valve from foreign matter or an electrical issue. "
...Is the clunking causing damage (chipping) to the transmission and introducing flakes of metal in the transmission?? I hoping that's a stupid statement and I'm completely wrong.

Also, I did replace transmission fluid about 3,000 miles ago via the tune-up guide here on the forums, hoping it's not related to this...Should I get transmission flushed in case I messed something up? I'm not sure if clunking and P2417 CEL code are related at this point...but I can't see why if I force the clunking issue it would trigger the CEL. I've never gotten the CEL light or the transmissions shifting problems without the clunking before, which makes me think the CEL is a fluke. Then I read this:

"The Check Engine Light may illuminate on vehicles with an automatic transmission, with codes P0751, P2714, or P0894 stored. Our technicians tell us these may be "false" codes. Revised powertrain control module (PCM) is available to correct this concern."

Perhaps Powertrain control module is heart of all my problems? When you take your car to the dealership does "diagnostics" help narrow down the problem?

Help?

Hey guys need to bring this post back. So my 07 4 runner is throwing some codes. P2714, O0776, C1340. If I drive it hard it will go into limp mode and I have to pull over shut truck off and restart for the limp mode to go away. If I baby it and drive it normal it will be fine. I did do a fluid change about 6 months ago. Fluid I used was what the local parts store crossed it to. Some type of synthetic fluid. what do you guys think should I get the solenoid that the code suggest is bad? change the fluid to factory stuff? thanks kyle

This is tough to diagnose over the forum, but seems like too big of a coincidence to ignore that you are getting these codes after running a different fluid for a few months.

It might be a good idea to switch back to the Toyota WS fluid and see if that helps. These transmissions are sensitive to fluid level too, so make sure it's topped off properly.

Edit: Is this a V6 or V8? Kind of an odd combination of DTC's. Attached are the pages from the service manual, might help troubleshooting.

I agree with the fluid level comment. It is very important to get the level right. Did you do the level check at the correct temperature with the vehicle running? That could very well be your issue. Regardless if you do a drain and fill or a full exchange the same critical issue of getting the fluid level correct is present.

Check it per the PDF procedure you can find on this forum.

Solenoid Part Verification

Summary: Need verification of proper solenoid. Part received looks different.

So I'm having the P2714 code on my 4runner. 2008 4Runner V8 Limited 4WD. I did a ton of research to make sure I purchased the correct solenoid. There wasn't much on any forums or websites on parts numbers and only one thread had a mechanic quoting the repair manual, but there were no parts numbers. I called the big Toyota dealer in my city and they said they have no info on the internal parts to the transmission because some reason about its a 3rd party provided transmission so they don't have that info.

I was able to use multiple parts websites to very the part number for my line pressure control solenoid D that is needed for this, and the part number I got is part #35290-60040. None of the websites had pictures of the actual part. I purchased it from:
https://parts.mcgeorgetoyota.com/oem-parts/toyota-solenoid-assy-line-3529060040

But verified it from: https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem/toyota~solenoid~assy~line~pressure~control~35290-60040.html

I got all the way to getting the solenoid out of my 4Runner when to my sad surprise the solenoid I pulled out of my 4Runner has very different valving cut into it than the one I had ordered. I've attached the different views of the solenoids. The one in packaging is the new one, I didn't want to remove it from the packaging in case I need to return it. If I need to post clearer pictures let me know.

Does anyone know if I ordered the incorrect part? Is this some sort of updated valve? The packaging slip confirmed it was the part number I ordered but maybe they sent me the wrong one. I made sure to specify on each website for parts I have the 4WD and each websearch showed the internal parts of the A750E and A750F (mine) had the same internal parts when it came to this.
