Check engine light, vsc light, traction light all on after a short circuit

Hi all. I seem to have *broken* my 4runner (2006 4runner V6).
I'm hopeful someone can shed some light on what might have happened to the truck.

I was changing my license plate light to LED and created a short which blew the tail light fuse. Stupid me had the parking/tail light on at the time (first click on the headlight switch) so that I could tell when I had the LED inserted in the correct orientation. The short happened when I was fiddling with the light socket while the parking/tail light was on.

That short must have done something else to the system besides blowing the tail light fuse (fuse has been replaced). The engine check light is now on (constant) along with the VSC and traction lights. The engine starts OK, but when I shift to reverse or D, the engagement is really rough (it creates a really strong jolt). Also, when I step on the gas while in park, the engine barely revs from idle and only revs a little when the pedal is pressed almost half way. Same thing while in drive, the vehicle barely moves when I pressed on the gas. It seems the system is cutting power to prevent mechanical damage?

I have reset the electrical system by disconnecting both battery terminals for 10 minutes. Still no luck in resolving the issues above. I'm wondering if my ECU is hosed..

I bought on ODB reader and will take a reading tonight when I get home. Has anyone seen these symptoms and if so do you have any suggestion on what/where I should check to diagnose the problem?

P2118 is the trouble code

The ODB reader reports P2118 as the trouble code. It also reports a "P2118 P" which is a pending code but i'm not sure what that really means.

I got this from a Bing search of the trouble code. Sounds like my ETCS got shorted.

When is the code detected?

The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the battery supply voltage applied to the electronic throttle actuator. When the power supply voltage drops below the threshold, the ECM concludes that the power supply circuit has an open circuit. A DTC is set and the MIL is turned on.

P2118 TOYOTA Description

The Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) has a dedicated power supply circuit. The voltage (+BM) is monitored and when the voltage is low (less than 4 V), the Engine Control Module (ECM) concludes that the ETCS has a fault and current to the throttle actuator is cut. When the voltage becomes unstable, the ETCS itself becomes unstable. For this reason, when the voltage is low, the current to the actuator is cut. If repairs are made and the system has returned to normal, turn the ignition switch OFF. The ECM then allows current to flow to the actuator and actuator can be restarted.

Turned out to be the the ETCS fuse

Replaced ETCS fuse. Disconnected and Reconnected battery. Issues resolved.

I accidently crossed my jumper cables while trying to start my 2008 4Runner. The cables became very hot. After they cooled I connected them correctly and the truck started but all the dash warning lights are on and the throttle is non responsive. How screwed am I?

Thank you for trusting Just Answer with your Toyota question. In the underhood fuse box, there is a 10A fuse marked ETCS. Check this fuse first.

I replaced the fuse with the spare and that did not correct the problem.

Ok, you probably have blown the main or ALT fuse. These are the large fuses with clear plastic tops. In the same fuse box you were in, use a flashlight to look into those fuses and you should be able to see if any are blown.

None of the fuses with clear tops appear to be blown. I was able to identify the ALT fuse and it also does not appear to be blown.

Disconnect the battery for a few minutes, then reconnect after replacing the fuse. Let me know if it is normal after that.

Replace the fuse and disconnected the battery for 20+ minutes. The VSC, ABS, Brake lights are still on.

Is everything else OK? Do you have access to a digital voltmeter or a 12 volt test light?

Everything seems to be working correctly. Cranks fine, throttle is working again. Brakes are working. The car will shift out of park.

I have a friend with a volt meter. I will try and get it. Can I respond to you later in the day?

Need to check the ABSENT fuse again and see if it is blown. If it is, remove it and check across the fuse terminals for battery voltage. In other words, one lead of the meter to each side of the fuse terminals. If we get battery voltage, we have a short to ground. Probably at the ABS computer. What we then need to do is unplug ALL the connectors from the ABS computer and see if the short goes away. If it does, the computer is shorted inside and will need to be replaced. I have seen this before in these situations.

Update:

I found another fuse associated with the ABS that was blown. After I replaced it and disconnected the battery, the warning lights are off!!

I pretty sure I dodged a bullet.

I figure I'll jump in on this one to help those that maybe looking when they idiotically jump their truck wrong.
I somehow crossed jumper cables (red to black, black to red)... don't ask me how, and jumped my 07 4runner from my 2010 sequoia. Well i experienced everything mentioned above but I could not get my engine to turn over. It would sputter start for about 10 sec and shut off, everything in the truck worked, I just could not get the engine to fire.

checked over all the fuses:
1.) the 10A fuse marked ETCS was blown (i missed it the first time i looked at it. brought it inside to look under a good light the second time. also the 7 F and dark didn't help)
2.) the 30amp purple/pink ABS fuse also blown. (when buying a new one make sure its purple/pink NOT clear/pink; that one will not fit.

The saddest part. i replaced the original battery because of this screw up. 11 years and 3 days old. :crybaby:
