Check Engine Light + VSC Lights

Hello again,

I have a 2004 4Runner SR5 V8. The other day I started my truck and the Check Engine Light + VSC Lights came on. I took it to the local "stealer ship" and they told me it was an oxygen sensor ... $400.00 worth !!! I asked them what does an O2 sensor have to do with the VSC? He told me when an O2 sensor goes, it automatically trips the VSC lights. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Check your gas cap. I had these lights come on when I didn't tighten the gas cap all the way. I had to disconnect the battery to reset them.

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry but I should have mentioned it before hand. That's the first thing I did; the gas cap was tightened. I apologize for the miscommunication on my part.

I'm not sure about the code or the O2 sensor they say it is...but when I installed my scangauge it reset my zero point calibration. If you search the forum for zero point calibration you should be able to find a thread explaining the TSB instructions to reset it

Figure it couldn't hurt..

Recently did two O2 bank2 sensors for my 03, V6. Depending on which one(s) need to be done. I think there are 4 total.

These are the ones I replaced, and did so in my drive way in about 30 minutes.

Its likely an 02 sensor. My header install finally killed one of my upstream sensors and ive had the check engine and the VSC/traction lights lit up. Im just gonna leave it until emissions time comes around. :madgrin:

Check the codes I just had the same thing with a check engine light and code was p0051 which is related to o2 sensor

Has the answers you're looking for in regards to why the other lights come on.

The first thing you should do when having a MIL diagnosed at any shop is to ask for the copy of the healthcheck and/or a list of what DTCs were pulled with the scantool.

I get people can't always get a hold of a scantool, but in this day and age if you're trying to diagnose a modern vehicle without one; you're wasting time and effort.
