Check engine light ?

I have a 2010 SR5, 4x4 with almost 68000 miles, that I bought new. I have never had any problems. Getting ready to leave the park today, I started the vehicle and the "check engine" light AND the "loss of traction" light are lit up on the dash. No alarms are sounding.

Also, this might be totaly irrelevant, but the last couple of weeks, the transmission shifter has become "spongy" going from PARK to DRIVE then to REVERSE, etc. It doesn't have the firm, crisp, tactile feel that has always been there.

Any suggestions ?

The dealer wants $80 to scan the codes. You can get it done free at Autozone and maybe other auto parts stores. They give you a print out of what the codes mean. I don't have a 5th gen, I have a 4th gen but generally if the CEL is blinking stop driving it until it's fixed. If it's not the most common causes are: you didn't put the gas cap on tight enough, or the O2 sensor is throwing a code. If it's the sensor the cheapest OEM Denso replacements are from Amazon.com and they're easy to change. The dealer charges about $400. My third gen cost me $58. You cancel the CEL by undoing the neg post of the battery and letting it discharge over night.

My cruise control won't work since the lights came on also.

Anyone ?

I believe Toyota has designed their cars to not allow the cruise control to work if the check engine light is on. My FR-S the light would always come on due to not have a front cat and cruise control would light up a different color then normal. I would clear the code and it would work just fine.

As far as the codes go I am no help.

If you're handy, pull up the shifter console and inspect. There's a possibility that something fell down into the shifter and is causing the malfunction. The actual transmission range sensor is located on the side of the trans, if I recall correctly. It reads the position of the shifter. I suspect that something fell into the shifter console and is causing an obstruction.

If you're not comfortable pulling up the center console, a trip to your trusted shop is in order.

Thanks for the info. I think that I'll let my dealer do it while they are doing my state inspection.
 
Query, do you shift lights work? i.e. when you shift into Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive; do the dashboard indicators also light up?

Its funny that you asked this because the shift lights were not working while the "check engine" light and "traction loss" light were on. Also, if I tried to manually shift, the gear indicator lights weren't working either.


But, for some unknown reason, the "check engine" and "traction loss" lights went off today while parking at work. And the shifter feels normal again. I believe Ducmonsta must have been right about something possibly falling into the shifter top/gate.

code advice....

New here so can't start a post...
My '12 4-runner has c1452, p0504 and p1604. O'Reilly's had not heard of the 3rd one...said these could be cascading codes. Any advice? Our local dealer is not the most reputable so I'd like to go in prepared.

You can google those codes. It works better if you put Toyota first and then the code. The C1452 is a Traction control Motor circuit. So that plus the brake switch A/B (P0504) and the Stat ability malfunction (P1604) make up the three. They don't seem to relate so more research is necessary. With a cheap code reader you should be able to erase those codes and see if any come back.

thanks so much! does that happen often that I erase and all disappear? Novice at this! Cheap code reader recommendations?

Others have had this be the Neutral Safety Switch. Do you live in the salt belt? You could crawl under, locate the switch and check the connector-may be corroded, seized, etc.
