the check engine light is on, and i was wandering how you check it to see whats wrong, older vehicles i had just blinked and i could get the code from it flashing. but this one is different. and Autozone cant diagnose it and i dont want to pay $80 to have it diagnosed. well can you guys tell me how to do it on my own. i also picked up a haynes mauel for pick ups and 4runner 1984-1995. it hasnt helped none really. well thanks i hope to hear from you guys

It could be something as simple as a leak in one of the vacuum hoses. My Toyota dealer charges $95 to hook up to the factory computer. Then they deduct $95 from any repairs they do.

I've had two instances where a local mechanic with Snap On diagnostics (claiming equivalency with Toyota factory diagnostics) find a code but unable to tell me what the code meant.

seems that you must like being infantry :hatsoff: lol, im a 94m radar repairer and im in fort sill oklahoma right now for 14 months of ait training. (it sux) anywas thanks for the links and info.. im going later today to purchase a coil and see what that does and might buy another EGR valve, i just dont want to spend to much money, yeah ill check the vaccum hoses and see if there bad. but when i looked earlier hell they all looked like showroom floor. this truck was well taken care of and is very clean. (when i bought it had a 6 page report from carfax lol)...and i also noticed yea it does idle funny sometimes. it goes up to 2k then down to 1500 then down to 1k then back up to like 1800 and then 1100 and other things. its kinda odd but ill replace it here soon and see what happens. there is wealth of knowledge on this website and i really like it already

i started as a 11B, then i went 18 series and got offerd 37F special operations was my life till a rouge IED ended it all.

Keep your head down and dont feed the blue falcon

haha roger that, ok so i bought a new coil and it made it idle and somewhat smoother kinda hard to explain the check engine light went away for about 10 miles then it came back on and i did the paperclip trick and the egr valve code came up 71 i think. so that'll be on my todo list!! again thanks to the site and all the helpfull information. ill get pictures up soon, i went and washed it, and cleaned it up pretty nice!!

Code 71 EGR

I got the same code and I can't get it to go away. I tried everything to avoid spending money on new parts but I finally ordered a new egr valve and temp sensor. I already replaced the modulator with a new one and all the vacuum lines in the egr system. I replaced the vsv as well but still no go.

The 4runner runs really good with no problems, if the new egr valve and temp sensor wont work, what else could it be?

The only other possible cause I can find from research is a bad O2 sensor, but I really don't see how that can effect the EGR system. If anyone out there had a cod 71 fixed please let me know what you did.

my runner flickers with that code it doesnt effect how it runs so i just ignore it.
try putting 5 gallons of gas in your tank and running one full can of seafoam it will clean a lot of your fuel and injections system out it can also clean up the EGR.

Seafoam

I've tried Seafoam too, it made the 4r run better but didint fix my light. After reseting the light multiple times, it never fail to come back on at about 75 miles.

Waiting for the new valve and temp sensor to come in, hopfully it will fix this problem. I would just ignore the light too seeing that performance or mpg is not effected but I got two months before I need to smog it and I'm not sure if it will pass or not even if I reset the light before taking it in.

10 k resistor trick

The EGR functions while the engine is coasting- at start up or WOT, it doesn't do a thing- the Computer is looking for a certain temperature reading from the EGR sensor during this time. which is why you get the code after 75 miles. Go to Radio shack and pick up a pack of 10K 1/2 watt resistors cost 99 cents. insert one resistor into the female end of the EGR sensor- one leg into each hole. Code 71 gone for good- it doesnt affect the performance of the EGR just tricks the computer that the EGR is heating up.
