I just did a brake job, the hard way.
I had a pull in my $1000 90 4runner. I knew the brakes were the cause, but, because i've done so much on this truck, I just hadn't gotten to the front end.
She pulled to the right under braking. Controllable, but a steady pull. I pulled the right front wheel off and found deep grooves in a thin rotor.
OK, rotors, pads, the calipers have to come off, so brake fluid. Hmm. This idler arm is shot.. And while it is up I will do the 2 differential oils and transfer case. I hadn't changed them yet. I have 4K miles on it now in 6 months.
Got all the parts and went at it. Brakes took a while, but all came apart fine, like a toyota always does. Mine is a rusty 90 that came from Maryland in about double ought and went to Salt lake. I have it in Grand Junction Co now.
After having a fight with the 90 weight (seems to always be a problem not dumping that cra*) I got 'er back on the road and took her for the ride... well, no more pull, and the brakes are now sure and solid. Pressure bled them and love it!
I drove the black truck for two days to work and back, and something still was not right. After a beer now, and I cannot remember why, but it was soft to the right. Weird. I thought the torsion bars were soft so I thought I'd check em. Ok, right is a lot soft... there it is, but look over at the left (look at the thread coming out of the bolt sticking out toward the floorboard, Stock is about 3/4") and there was 2"! The right was only about 3/8". So this says it is soft on the right side. Measure top of wheelwell to ground and found 34" on the right, and 34.75 on the left! Oh!
OK, so the right bolt is soft, the left tight. The front end is low, so tighten the loose one. Forget the extra length to left bolt and tighten the right until the ride comes up, then lower the left a little to level it and Bingo!
OK, so the bolts still arent even, or but now its level and drives fantastic. Gotta do something about the 3.slow.
