Choice between King and Icon remote res w/ adjusters

Before the search function nazis pour out to give their usual response, let me say I've spent some time searching/reading on this topic. A lot of the replies seem to be from 2014-2015 and I'd just like some fresh opinion.

***Vehicle use- Daily driver w 75% blacktop driving. Will be used on a lot of trips traveling/exploring out west. It will get plenty of off-road use from a wide range of terrain.

I'm looking at the King and Icon ext travel Coilovers w/ remote res and the valving adjusters. From a couple of vendors, they are both within just a few dollars of each other so the price seems to be a wash.

I'm just looking for opinions on both. Preferably from people who have used one of both of them. From all the research and reading it's hard to find any negative comments on either. The only thing I've seen so far is that the Kings are not recommended to be ran higher than 2" (lift) for the best performance (why?). The Icons list a 0"-3.5" lift range. I would be hoping to get close to 3" of lift from these.

On both brands everyone seems to have the same opinion of don't cheap out and not get the adjusters. Everyone says the adjusters are money well spent.

I have used the Icon remote res front shocks (non adjustable) and piggy back rears on my last F250 build. I was very satisfied with them as far as ride comfort (on a 3/4 ton truck). I have zero experience with King, but I'm well aware that they seem to be the "go to" shock for desert/race/extreme off-road.

I would probably just go blindly with the King based on their proven track record alone, but only being able to run them at 2" of lift is a big down side for me. My current 6112 front setup is maxed out on the highest setting and my center hub to bottom of fender measurement is just barely 22". This is almost a full inch shorter than what I see the majority of people getting on their 5th gens with a front lift application (when maxed out). Some may say it's only an inch, but an inch on a 4Runner is a a lot. I do not want to eat up my CV's with bad angles, but I don't see many people having this problem with the full 3" lifts.

Both are 100% rebuildable. It seems the Icons may be a bit more expensive to rebuild from a few reports. A lot of people say the king Coilovers must be taken off to adjust them, but that's not actually true. The vehicle just needs to be lifted and allow the suspension to droop. I'd most likely do the same thing with the Icons to keep from gauling the threads.

So.....what would you pick and why? King or Icon? Anything negative to say about either of them? Any way around only getting 2" out of the Kings?

Firstly, there is nothing special about a 2016 that wouldn't apply to a 2014 or 15, or a 2010 even. Same chassis, same suspension, same approximate weight.
If you want honest opinions from someone who knows what they are talking about, call Ben at Filthy Motorsports. Here, you are just going to get a bunch of fan boys for each brand giving their options of which ever setup they run with no basis for comparison and no objectivity.

ICON vs. King

These are all good questions. I am asking the same questions myself as I am about to lift my 2015 T4R Trail with KDSS. I want the same long travel shocks.
Will be following this to hear everyone's comments. Everyone has a bias. Let's hear them ...

The OEM kings come factory set at 1.5 inches, and you can raise it to 2.5 inches with no real degradation in ride quality. I'm currently at 3 inches, and the ride does get noticeable firmer, but it isn't bad at all. I just ended up adjusting my shocks to be softer to compensate for the firmness (which is why you want the adjusters).

CV angles will get a bit wonky the higher you go up, no matter what brand you choose. You can use a diff spacer, but some say its gimmicky. I'm running a diff spacer for the peace of mind, and my CV angles don't look too bad.

You can adjust the height as long as you lift the wheel off the ground.

The reason I went with kings over icon and fox is purely due to customer service, serviceability, and that kings are local to me.

Only con I see with kings, is that the springs they come with tend to be a bit soft, which is okay if you don't add any weight to your rig. Also, for the money you are paying it doesn't come with a spanner wrench (which is okay, b/c I rather use a large punch anyways).

Honestly though, if I had to do it all over again, I'd probably choose something more budget friendly. I've rarely adjusted the height or the firmness once I found a setting that I liked, and unless you daily drive on a unmaintained gravel road, you probably will never come close to getting your money's worth out of kings/icon/fox.

I went with fox because my friend and I have ran them in everything for years and had no issues. When I looked to get mine I read THIS site that did a breakdown comparison.

I like the ride of my Fox on the street but when I go to the desert I get too much bounce so I'll be getting a set of bypass shocks for the front also.

ben told me i could get 2.5 lift with extended kings and aftermarket uppers and still have a great ride and functional shocks lol. super smart guy. To all those guys who run 3-3.5" of lift with their icons i find it hard to believe they ride half decent. not to mention they're using all their droop travel to get THAT STANCE:crazy::crazy::crazy:

What do you think you'd be happy with now that's cheaper that would give you the same/equal ride quality?

I just purchased new suspension yesterday, was going to go with King Shock but decided to try the OME BP51's instead (Medium/400lb) Coils. It seems these may match the quality or even surpass Kings. Spanner wrenchs are included.

Good luck.

If I had to do it over again, I'd figure out how much weight you plan on adding, and then go with the corresponding kings/icon/fox coilover and spring combo minus the adjustability and remote res.

Since I'm a king's susp. fan, I'd stick with kings but minus all the bells and whistles.

One is not better than the other, just different.

Kings are progressive valved, Icon are digressive. This means Icons have a bit more platform (which feels nice and controlled on road).

The adjusters are sort of meh on both of these from my experience. I'm not saying.. don't get them, but it's more like very fine tuning and not that useful.

Fox has a much dampening adjuster.. but they are the worst company to deal with. SO bad, that I've been trying to buy their Long travel coil overs and most dealers just won't order them due to lead times that are very long. Also, they have quality control issue and have poor customer service from my past experience with them.

In summary, I feel Icon are a tad better on the road on a non KDSS truck, but it is more personal preference.. King are fantastic.

A month ago I was in the same situation. I went with Icon because the valving digressive. I believe digressive is better for the type of offroading that sometimes I do (mountain with good drops and steps), when the truck drop from an obstacle, the digressive suspension will hold better and maximize the clearance. In the order hand, I hear that Icon could be harsh if this is your daily driver, for this reason I spent the extra $ and got the adjuster. I have the setting in the lowest for my normal commute and the ride is really soft. Hope this help.

Can you give an update on your King setup? Are you happy with it? Did you ever have any issues with your CV angles or boots down the road after some miles on it? What did you end up with on overall lift height?

Have you used your new setup off-road yet? Any regrets? What springs and shocks do you have in the rear? Do you know what your final measurements were from the center of the hub to the bottom of the fender?

No Issues. Adjusted down to show 7-8 threads up front on both sides.
I attained about 4 inches of lift from stock, but that includes upsizing to 34" tires at the same time.

I definitely wouldn't say they surpass any of the big 3 brands, OME just caught on that if they make them look as good as a high end shock, people will think they perform as good, but Ben from Filthy Motorsports cuts them open in this video and clearly shows that they are inferior shocks. He does say that they would be good for a "daily driver" or "light off-roader" though.

I ended up going with the Icon 2.5's with remotes and the adjusters. Ive used the Icon remotes on another vehicle that I had and I was happy with them for the 40,000 miles that I ran them. I hope I get the same happiness from these. They will certainly see some off-road use in the next year.
