Choosing tire sizes

I'm gonna be buying new tires next week and i've settled on grabber at2's. However I'm trying to choose between 2 sizes. Stock size, or the 235/80 17.

I really like the look of the old school slim tire. On my FJ62 I went from 315 tires (bought that way) to 245 to save on gas and to lessen the load on the truck. Looked better too! As far as performance offroad, the difference would probably be marginal although I've read about slimmer tires performing better in certain situations. I've read about a few times where people have used this size tire on their 5th gen although there isn't too much info.

I'm curious about opinions or experience. Stock size is always safe, and ok with me. But I really like the look of the skinny's!

The 5th gen is a big heavy bulky beast with a high COG. Why would you want to run a really skinny tire and not even have it gain any contact patch via more height. You would be reducing traction and stability in all conditions IMHO. Hard to say how much though.

That is my main consideration really. Will there be any stability changes and how much? I'll probably go with stock size because of the uncertainty.

The grabbers only come in a 255/70 which is a smaller tire than stock. And for the price and reviews of them I definitely want to stick with them.

Will 255/75 fit a stock truck? I'd like a taller sidewall if possible.

I would go with stock size. 235/80/17's are really made for dually trucks. They're fine for single rear wheel use too - but they will look funny on OEM wheels. They're kinda narrow for even a 7" wheel. Probably can't air down much at all with them.

I would either choose a stock size, or a different tire. 255/75/17 is a bit narrower than stock and about the same height.

Thanks for the input. Maybe someday I'll play around with it, but for now I'll just get the right stuff. Stock size it is! I'd do 255/75 or 255/80 if they had it in this tire... But alas they don't.

Here ya go... yea, the cooper ST Maxx are pretty aggressive for an 'all terrain tire'. Width wise you'd never know they're narrower than the factory tires. Biggest thing to remember is the metric width size on the tire is section width, not tread width. They're roughly the same 99% of the time, but heavy duty tires with a square shoulder and sidewall can end up wider on the tread.

I wish they would sell the ST Maxx in a C rating. I got the AT3s instead because it's almost 20 lbs/tire lighter but I prefer the look of the ST Maxx

I'm running 255/75's and they are great, slightly taller than stock, no rubbing and only slightly narrower than the 265's.

I think what I'm gathering from reading DOZENS of posts regarding lift and tire sizes and rubbing is that a lot of it comes down to the rim. Stock TE/OR 7.5 inch rims will fit just about anything (besides 285s) without rubbing.

I'm lifting the wife's 18 ORP 2.5 front and 1.5 spacer with 5100s all around in a week or so. Based upon your success, I'm going 255/80 ST MAXX with 100% confidence. I'm expecting it to look a bit doofy with the stock tires in the meantime.
