Has anyone done it? Chrome plating the stock front skid plate - that is. If so, how much did it cost and how does it look?

are talking about the stock skidplate, as in the bakers dozen worth of aluminum cans stretched out for some kind of (read: minimal) protection or are u talking the accessory skid plate that is meant for tacos and some put on 4runners?
Both are pieces of sh@t. the accessory one is at best a waste of money and mounting technique and time.... whilst the stock will take the hits and i mean TAKE as in bend.

chroming I see as a waste, let alone on a 'skid plate' ;a part that is MEANT to take ABUSE. we arent talking 300c's or hemis here people

$0.003

Yea that flimsy thing is crap, i agree. I'm talking about factory black plates already installed under the engine. The one that is visible from the front is the first plate of two. Those are painted but look cheap and paint is not durable for skid plate duty. Chrome is pricey but lasts longer and I think may look cool as well.

Chrome won't hold up well if the real skid plate takes a hit as intended;IMO it would look a little dumb chrome since looks isn't it's purpose.

The "flimsy" stock faux plate isn't pretending to be for protection as nobody has ever stated it was for that and anybody that off roads with it in place simply isn't informed and Toyota only put it on to enhance the look.

Try spray on Dupli-Color Instant Chrome .
If you don't like it you can always paint it again. Dupli-Color also makes an Alumimum spray on ceramic heat resistant paint for exhaust headers. Then you can do your complete exhaust system to match the skid.

Ron, you answered your own question - it's not for protection, it's just "to enhance the look". Same reason you'd get chrome wheels. Here is a sample:
