Today I just bought a gem...

It has been in the works for a while but I picked her up this afternoon.

1987 SR5 Loaded ONE OWNER 1st gen. All original, no stains, tears, no flaws on the inside at all. You sit in it and it may as wellbe 1987.

Garage kept TX Truck 100% rust free like new...

Enjoy...build thread coming soon..

oh hell yes "yay you" that is amazing and I'm excited to watch her develop into a sexy beast!

She will sit a couple months. We are moving in OCT and I won't do anything until then.

She will get bumpers, winch, lights, lift, tires, and a good detailing.. Not to mention a full tune up and lots of love...

I am having a Jeckel and Hyde fight right now.

This thing is so perfect, do I do the bumpers, SAS, gears, bob? Or do I flip it and buy one in a little worse shape to mod out.

I cannot talk my self into doing much to this time machine.

Mod or not to mod?

I have 5200 in it, the origional owner said it runs fine but keep loosing coolant with no drips. It is defiantly a head gasket, so I am going to do the head on it ( I know people have had luck just loosening the head and re-torquing it, but I just want it reliable) and have it professionally detailed and waxed.

I won't have much more than 6k in it when all is said and done, so I can sell to a collector or mod it out.

Vote now.....lol

This one comes to mind.

I may get flamed for this but I say don't mod it. This one is in too good of shape. I would restore it as best as you can. Fix the head gasket. Fix all the little things. Parts are cheap for the 1st gen. Fix the rear leaf packs ( I see they are worn) get everything 100% and enjoy it.

Find a beat up one for major modification. Thats just my opinion.

I agree that you shouldn't mod it, but I wouldn't flip it just yet either. Restore it the right way and keep it just like that, these things keep going up in price and I bet you'll make a lot more off it in five years.

I would suggest to fix it and sell it. You can probably get close to 10k for it once its fixed. With that you can find an 85 and deck it out or buy one for 10 that is already built to the hilt. Scotty with addicted offroad sold his sweet orange 1st gen that was built for 12k and it was sweet!

It needs two pcs of chrome trim and the arm rest recovered. The leaf packs are perfect and have no sag. The picture is misleading. The truck is still on the trailer and the straps are hooked to the frame. It makes it look like its sagging.

Thank you for the input

Problem with fixing it and not selling is cost. 6k plus insurance (full coverage) $54/month. In 5 years with registration and inspection I could be looking at close to 700 dollars a year or 3500 over 5 years. Then I own it for 10k...

This is a hard decision man.

I saw a DX in similar shape go two days ago on eBay for $9200. This one is in as good of shape and it is an SR5 with gauges, cruise control, door pockets, inclinometer, floor mats, OEM bug guard (rare) and what ever else came on the SR5. I should be able to flip it for 8500-9500 pretty quick once I do the head on it.

So do I try to pull 3-5k profit on it now. Of do I make it my own. I like your idea of finding an 85. Save me part of the SAS.

Full insurance? Ok, I guess, but insurance is a scam by definition. The only things I have insured are things that I can't afford to replace, or things I'm required to insure by law or contract.

That's another thread, but yeah, if you're planning on running full insurance on it then you definitely need to factor that into what you've paid for it.

I'll have a stock '85 for sale here shortly, it's got some rust and a loved interior, it'll make a great builder.

I think if you want a sweet dd then keep what you have, but if you want to cut something up then that's not the rig to do it with... Must my .02

If you're set on sas and bobbing it, flip your runner and make money towards something more suitable for cutting up.

I may be interested in your 85

As far as insurance, my wife is a State Farm agent, so I get the pros and cons, in tx there are something like 33% of drivers without insurance and since I don't really have any cheap vehicles I cannot afford to replace them. Heck, if someone stole this 87... I don't have over 6 k to replace it.

Let me know on that 85

I suggest to fix the head gasket, do a very clean manual transmission swap, and either drive it or sell it.

my 2¢

I have no idea how to do the cent sign on my keyboard...well played...lol

BTW..... It took me forever to find a clean automatic that I could afford, no way would I tear it out in exchange for a 5speed. True the 5speed has better power, and is reliable. but I like having an auto when I wheel. My Tacoma on the dana 60s was 5 speed and I did not like wheeling hard trails in it...I guess I just suck at pushing three pedals at once......Everything since that build has been auto...
