Class 2 Hitch? Why?

OK, so we just bought an '08 4Runner SR5 w/the V8 and I just found out the factory hitch is only a class 2. Why would they not at least use a class 3? We traded in an 05 Pathfinder that we used to tow a travel trailer (4200lb) with no problem. Does anyone know if there is a factory class 3 or above hitch available? Or a good aftermarket one that looks like it came with the truck? Any help would be appreciated!

It was delivered to the dealer with no hitch. The parts managers buddy has a struggling hitch shop. The buddy said to the parts manager I'll give you a kick back if you buy some hitches from me. I can get them for $70/each and we can sell them for $200.

I really don't know, I'm making that story up. Never heard of a Class II for the 4th gen T4R. I would definately complain. If you get nowhere call Toyota directly. I'm sure they would frown on the dealer using truly inferior non-Toyota accessories and trying to pass them off as the "real deal".

There are good aftermarket ones... Hidden Hitch and Curt buth make nice units.

Hmmmm?? My father in laws 03 V8 has a class IV factory... I just installed a Valley class IV on my 07 and love it. Fits great didn't have to cut the bumper and it was only $136 on ebay! 20 min install myself and a friend.

Does the hitch have a label with weight ratings? Do you have a pic of the hitch? Does it take the standard hitch or is it the smaller one normally associated w/Class II? IIRC Class II and Class I are supposed to take the smaller hitch to remind you they are lessor in capacity. Where are you? Different regions do different things sometimes... Maybe this is something that started in '08.

My "'08 4Runner SR5 w/the V8" has a Class IV WD hitch. That's odd that you have a lighter duty hitch. Pictures would definitely be of assistance.

My '07 V8 came with the load distributing hitch, and 2" Ball Mount Kit standard.

Class II is an 1 1/4" square hole. The Class IV that should be on there is a 2 inch square. What does your truck have? Maybe the dealer just made a typo when writing up the description?

I don't even know a company that makes a class II for the 4Runner, and making one sounds more expensive than if they just put the real deal on there.

I have a class II and chose that one specifically because I felt a class III would allow more than what my engine could handle. I know the frame can handle the capacities of class III, but the rear suspension couldn't handle it well without modification. I only wanted a hitch for towing jet skis and motorcycles anyway. I figured if I could afford to buy something that would exceed the specs of a class II, then I could afford to buy a new vehicle to handle it. I do think all the 4th gens should have the class III though, since the only questionable capacity issue would be the suspension.

The V8, except early 2003s has the beefier weight distributing hitch.

Hmm thats weird. Mine has the Class IV WD hitch which says 700lb tongue weight when used as a hitch and 1030lb tongue weight when used as a WD hitch.

What does it look like, it should be curved tubular construction that hangs below the frame rails. Most aftermarket ones are square - and like others have said, have the smaller hole.
