Classic rear window issue, details inside

please dont say use the search function, ive been scouring this site for 3 hrs and couldn't find what i was looking for, im just looking for some quality advice from a solid community!

Hey guys, been a while since ive posted as i had to sell my 3rd gen to snag a commuter, but now ive got back in the t4r scene with my semi recent purchase of a 91 4runner sr5. This thing's a badass rig, with a low mileage 3.4 swap will all seals and gaskets replaced, as well as mounts,bushings, joints, shocks, etc. The problem is that the rear window stopped rolling down a few weeks after i got it.

When pressing the console button, i could hear the up relay in the rear panel clicking, but no click when i pushed the down switch. Naturally I thought I had a faulty relay module so i snagged one from the pick n pull and plugged er in, yet the same problem still persists. The wiper functions flawlessly and the window motor worked great when i got it, rolling up at the speed it should. So now I'm wondering what step to take next. input is highly appreciated :thanks:

Thanks man, the thing's a screamer with full headers and complete 2.5 in magnaflow exhaust. i just really wish I could get into the back with out climbing through a door haha.

The hood scoop wouldn't have been my first choice but given the fact there's a hole in the hood to accomodate the 3.4 i can't complain too much. I want to get some 3400 quadcam decals for it though.

EDIT* Mikefr our rigs look like twins except mines a 5 spd w/ blue interior! I wish my side decal wasn't completely faded away.

But lets not get off track Ill compile a build thread later haha

Me too haha. Ive got tomorrow and friday off so im hopin to make some progress on it.

the window tracks are very common to rust .. that would be my guess .
you need to "look" at the back window guts

That 4Runner is sooooo nice looking.

FWIW I have a 1st gen that had the same symptom in the opposite direction.. The switch was probably dirty inside so the power was not getting sent on the "up" position. So of course the relay did not kick in. I swapped the switch with a known good one and it works fine now. I think there are a couple of write ups on how to easily clean the snudge out of the switch.

I pulled the console switch. its pretty gummed up so ill be making a jy run this weekend.

not possible to just clean the switch? switches usually don't go 'bad', esp one that isn't used continuously like the rear window. A good cleaning/sanding the contacts should get it back to new condition.

the contacts on the wires? those are clean. If you are talking about inside the switch then I need to try that. how do you open up the housing to clean under the switch?
