Classic T4R's with A/C? Who else has it?

According to a test that "Mythbusters" did a few years ago about which is more fuel efficient - A/C on and window's UP or A/C off and window's DOWN. The final result was using A/C and having the window's up is actually MORE fuel efficient due to the increased wind resistant/drag the window's create when they're down.

I KNOW my MPGs are better with the AC on and the windows up..........but that is because there is a direct correlation between my temper and my right foot.

Thanks for getting back to me on my post everyone! Isnt it great to cruise by cars 15 even 20 years newer than yours and your ice cold and comfortable and they have there windows down sweating wishing their ac still worked haha. A lot of early to mid 2000 american auto owners know what im talking about lol!

my '90 has still got the r12, and it blows cold!! its a nice change. i lived without ac for 4 years.

From my experience, Toyota/Lexus' seem to have the coldest, and durable of course, AC. I rented a Ford Fusion for work yesterday. It's got too many buttons to push, fan blows strong, but car still felt stuffy (AC' cools air and removes moisture from it).

Yup. I haven't bothered to yank mine yet, but it's never worked. Did you notice any better cooling with it gone?

A.C. has to be run regularly if you want to see it last. That means winter, summer, hot and cold weather. Most used vehicles sold in N.E. no longer have their A.C. working because it has been neglected. I've removed a number of defunct systems. You may need it two weeks out of the year here. Often the Condenser will be green with decay. I still have the compressor in my current 4runner and have been studying the best way to remove it without removing any other parts. It doesn't seem possible.

My '86 has A/C and I'm going to swap the motor and A/C to my '88 with a clean body.

Is there a way to tell if the A/C has been converted to R134a?

Well, normally the high and low ports are different sizes....one red and one blue with r134a....should be a sticker to tell if it was converted, but not always.

I just went out with a flashlight and checked. Unfortunately, I have two larger black caps that are the same size and threaded. Looks like mine is still old school R12. I'll have to convert to R134a when I'm doing the swap.

I bought the old Toyota service manual for installing A/C in a 4Runner that doesn't have it. That should help me remove and install the interior parts before I do the engine swap. I'm motivated by the thought of having cold A/C in the dog days of August in Baltimore.
