ClassIII Hitch 3rd gen help!

hey guys, from what ive read hitches are interchangeable on 3rd gens but do hitches all require mounting brackets? specific to 3rd gens? anyone know of hitch brand NOT requiring mounting brackets? thanks for any help!!

also would a plug & go wiring harness from a 2002(not sure model/trim) fit a 99 sr5?

99sr5, looking at a reese from a 2002?

The factory hitch on my '99 SR5 bolted directly to the frame, no bracket involved, just a little strap carrier for two of the nuts. The hitch that came on the '01 frame I replaced my rusty '99 one with has a different hitch but mounted the same way, no brackets.

It is a piece of metal with two nuts welded to it that slides inside the framerail so that you can put bolts through existing holes in the frame.

I really don't want to confront the logistics of shipping to Canada, sorry. I like it better than the other one, but the bolts are frozen so I am sort of "Stuck" with the '01 for the time being. . So I think I'd rather hang on to the '99 in case I need to pull the '01 for some reason.

IIRC the carrier bracket isn't totally necessary. You can just hold the nut in place with your fingers or an implement of some sort until friction takes over, then you can torque the bolts down properly.

There were two styles of OEM hitch, the early version was a 3-piece setup, like this:

You can also see the stick nuts that slide into the frame for extra attachment points.

The later ones are completely welded. All aftermarket hitches are similar one-piece designs. No brackets needed.

I used a long box wrench and Scotch taped the nut into the box from the top. Then I set the wrench end/nut on top of the bolt end and turned the bolt until it caught. The wrench was too short for the second bolt, so I taped it to a paint stirrer as an extension. I don't know how you couid do it with your fingers.

I made new nut holders out of stainless and welded nuts to them.

I cut 4 strips, two for the puppy hauler and two for my SR5 project. Used the old one I cut the bolt heads off of the locate the holes and punched the holes in and then clamped the old and new together with what was left of the bolt sticking through the holes and set a nut over it and welded it. Between liberal use of antize and the stainless holders if it ever has to come off again it should be much easier.

I had to remove the hitch on the puppy hauler for the rear bumper job.

I think you're right. I double checked mine (aftermarket Curt brand) and I think it has a slightly different mounting than the original, and only uses the rearmost hole.
