Cleaning throttle body, necessary to remove?

Nope...you don't need to. You can get it really clean while its still on.
Can you get it extra clean by removing it? Yes. Def avoid allowing things to run into the IAC (there's a little opening on the bottom of the Throttle body--- its really obvious so you'll see it).
Some people also remove the IAC and clean that out as well but you'll need a new gasket and the screws tend to be very soft and strip easily. I put in a new gasket and new, harder screws when i did mine..

Yes that is how I do it on my Runner and other autos, just spray, move the plate back and forth while using a clean cloth to wipe front, edges and backside as much as possible, its mostly about the edges where it pivots, those need the cleaning. Luck.

Just be aware of the holes that drain into the IAC. If you let too much get in you'll be doing it twice, and cleaning the IAC with it.
3 different ways
1) if its been a long time, ( like no history or never) I go ahead and remove and open up the IAC and clean it really well and get any kind of grime out so that it works smoothly.
2) if say I had done the IAC in the past few years, then I will just shoot some cleaner in without removing
3) with a bent straw trick spray sea foam in while its running. they sell a can with a bent straw but not all stores sell it
when ever I do valve cover gaskets, I do a good cleaning of the IAC and throttle body while its all off, and soak the intakes to get gook out...why not
the screws although look like phillips heads are JAS and JAS drivers fit better and less likely to strip
last time and I was on short notice, NAPA even had the IAC gasket and the throttle body gasket
also ever notice that TRD has a throtte body gasket and its a big "O" instead of the "D" shape of the stock gasket. The last time I did one I cut it into the "O" but I could tell no difference....maybe it helps if you have a super charger

The D shape is there for some sort of cylinder filling or airflow into the plenum... which is totally different with the supercharger. I did the same with my gasket just for grins, also with no difference noticeable.

To be more clear - two of them are coolant and one is not... Lightly clamp or plug the coolant hoses to avoid losing too much.
