Clicking Accelerator

Over this past week, my gas pedal clicks when I push it down and when I release it. You can feel the click in your foot and it gets really annoying at times. This seemed to be an intermitent problem at first, but it is getting more annoying and frequent. I was thinking that dirt may have gotten stuck somwhere but there doesn't seem many places that dirt could get stuck in. Does anybody have any ideas what can be causing this? Also, any tips on how to diagnose this noise?

Mark, unfortunately the best way to diagnose this is probably going to be laying on your back in the floorboard with a flashlight, and with your nose a few inches away from the gas pedal as you push it up and down.


One thing to consider is that it may not be the gas pedal so much as what is connected to the other end of the accelerator cable. In past Toyotas, I have had issues with the throttle plate gumming up inside the throttle body and causing the gas pedal to have an abrupt, sticky feel to it. It wasn't anything like a click though.

Thanks for the response. That will be my task for tomorrow. The things that is scarng me is that the click is getting more noticeable as time goes on. The pedal doesn't feel sticky when I push it down. The best way I can describe it is it feels/sounds like sand is caught in the back of the pedal. If I can't find it, I guess it will be off to the dealer for a test drive with a technician.
