Clicking noise at idle

Does that click noise mean I need a valve adjustment? It's coming from the driver side, from the engine.

It could be an exhaust leak but its most likely a valve tap which yes would mean you need a valve adjustment but it's not an easy or cheap job.
 
no my dad doesn't own a shop lol to clear things up I take it to the mechanic shop my dad has been taking his cars to for 40 years.

anyways. a valve job is pretty expensive. I have no idea what happens if you drive it that way. I assume that eventually (UNK # miles) something will blow up .. get a lot worse.

Is this ticking new? You had coolant and overheating issues last I heard.
 
Atreyus, suggest you put your truck miles in your SIG. This will help people get an idea of what could be happening. A vehicle with 125k is probably going to be diagnosed differently than one is 200k miles.
 
A valve adjustment is no big deal. Follow the instructions in a Hanes manual. The worst part on this motor is probably getting the valve covers off. Every time you hear that click your valve is getting weaker, one day it will fail. Knowing when, is a guestimation. I've seen people run with clicking valves for months and not even care. Also seen valvtrains fail after clicking for just minutes. Adjustment is the first step.
 
My valves have been tapping for about 20k and I've had a bottom end knock for about 25k, at this point I'm just looking for a new engine but I can't get over that ~$1000 price tag on a used engine! She still runs strong and I've only noticed minimal power loss but you may not end up as lucky as I have.
 
I had a clicking that I could only hear at idle - I thought maybe exhaust leak. It lasted for several months and then I went on a long road trip. After starting it the next day, it ran really rough and threw a misfire code. I pulled the #3 plug that the code referenced, and the electrode grounds were completely gone (they were bosch with 4 electrodes that the PO had installed). I replaced all the plugs and ... the clicking at idle was gone

I'm still not sure technically what was making the clicking sound ... maybe something to check ...
 
Calling around trying to get quotes, I called one place and they suggested to put some solution in the oil because the lifter is sticking or something? It's $20 and he said it's worth a try, I'm not sure but I might try it.
 
DON"T put any "solution" into your engine.

If you really want to do that and are desperate then start a new thread titled:

"I am going to pour ____ into my engine, is it a good idea"

You never know what people will say but I bet a lot of the wrench heads will respond.

Not trying to say its not a valve tap, but open the hood while it is tapping check on the driver side fender well next to the brake booster on he evap canister. It has vacuum valve that sounds like a valve tapping when it comes on. Mine does that at idle from time to time and will throw a Evap malfunction code. It happens when the gas cap is not venting properly and the valve kicks on. I have yet to buy a new gas cap I just reset the code and drive some more. It only happens @ idle and will throw the code if I run it low on fuel. Just a suggestion, cheaper to replace the cap than it is to get a valve job done
 
What do you guys suggest? This just had to happen to me right after I fixed my over heating problem lol. My Bilstein 5100's and 890's are gonna have to wait again! I even had the lower ball joints in mind too...
