Clicking noise when in reverse 06 4RUNNER??What is it?

I purchased a CPO 2006 4Runner Sport 4WD V8 and noticed that when in reverse, I am hearing a clicking sound (1-2 clicks) when backing out or into a parking spot going from forward to reverse. My buddy says its def. coming from the front right wheel. What can this be? 35k miles on it, owned it for 1 week and its freaking me out. My old Jeep used to do this when my CV's were going. Thanks in advance

Woke up this am, drove to work and didnt hear the clicks. Later in the day parked and backed out to test it and "Click." Ive narrowed it down to only happening when my brake peddle is compressed in idle when backing up??? Its coming from the front RIGHT.

I get the same EXACT two clicks! Sometimes sounds like a pop. SOS!!!

got the same as well, in the front. almost sounds like a pebble rolling around inside of an empty coffee can. two clicks as well.

Woke up this am, drove to work and didnt hear the clicks. It's happening after being driven for awhile (ie 3 hours of Christmas shopping and it was doing it every time.)

Thanks a lot. I will try this out when I drive next. I never really paid too much attention to it, but it is definitely there.

Yeah, I know but it shouldnt be making that sound! Not only that, its only making the sound on the Right Front side. It shouldnt sound like that, I dont care what it is.

Took mine back to the dealership for somewhat the same reason.

I too heard the clicking while backing. I noticed it in the mornings getting out of the garage. BUT...I took mine in after some driving with the windows down, and noticed that I could hear the disc-pads rattling. I find this absolutely unacceptable for a one-year old, $40,000+ vehicle.

Took it in, it came back in a half-hour or so and they said there was 'no problem" with it. I told them how I felt about the rattle and off I went. Kinda the same response I got from them about the slip-joint "clunk" that I later fixed.

Go figure !

So how did you fix the problem. Man, I backed out of my girlfriends drive after her father checked out my truck and sure enough it sounded like a part of the engine fell off onto the drive. If it's "normal", why does only the right front make the noise? It's unnacceptable and it makes the truck sound like a piece of junk. I could only imagine trying to sell it and haveing a potential buyer throw it in reverse and hear click" "click" "click". He'd run away!

My 2004 has made the same noise since new as well as my 2007 corolla. Next time I have the wheels off I'm going to try a dry lube on the pad retaining pins. It is a very annoying sound.

Ok. Got my 4RNR back from the dealer on Monday and they resolved the "clacking" noise. At first, when I was describing the noise, one of the techs said it was "normal w caliper setup." I told him that if it was normal, "why doesn't it happen on both the R and L sides as well as on my friend's, sister's, and father's 2006-2007 4RUNNERs?" (None of these people have heard a clicking noise). He shut up pretty quick when I told him I would ask TOYOTA if this was "normal" in a letter to their Corp Office.

After cleaning off the breaks, lubing up, etc the noise stopped. I met the mechanic and he admitted that it should NOT have made that sound. It took him several hours of checking everything from the EBreak to cleaning the breaks, etc before he lubed it up, tightened a "few things" and got it to stop. If it happens again, he said to bring it in but he DID say this is NOT normal so dont take that for an answer.

When driving, you may think it is coming from the rear but when someone is outside or you have your windows open, it's apparent it is coming from your front breaks as you pump them in reverse.

Let me know if you bring yours in and they have a more specific explanation as to what was causing the sound.

I am convinced that mine is the break pads "rattling" in the caliper. I am amazed that a $40K+ vehicle has to suffer from something like this !!

Its not. The Service Dept can fix it. If you can demonstrate the sound to them, tell them you do not want the car back until its fixed. Read my post above. I took it in and they fixed the problem.

Just to bring some light to this conversation, i experienced the same clanking noise in reverse when i tapped my brakes. VERY ANNOYING!!!. I work at a car dealership in the service department and i finally got around to throwing it onto the lift. My noise was mainly coming from the front left and right rear. Pulled both wheels off and after checking it over, I ended up finding that the tension clips were missing. ( These clips hold the brake pads away from the rotor and keeps the brake pads stout and in the correct position). I could move the brake pad within the caliper and could replicate the exact noise i heard in reverse. So I called up Smith here in Cincinnati and threw them on and $4 dollars later i was back to the quiet braking in reverse. So all of you out there with the same problem, make sure you have two tension clips on each caliper. They are little metal clips in the shape of a V and are located on the backside of the caliper. They are visible with the wheel on and you can actually touch them with the wheel on.

Clicking

Weird, I have an '05 SR5 and I get the same loud click.. but it's only 1 when reversing. It sounds like it's coming from the drivers side front, but it could be the passenger. Its pretty loud. I guess i'll have them check out the brakes and all..

Well I took the T4R in to my mechanic today all ready to spend about $30 to redo all 4 wheels with the tension clips/shims thinking it would fix my problem.

He calls me about 4 hours later saying that one of the 4 pistons in both front calipers are not moving smoothly and could seize at any moment. Great. So I thought it would be a $30 fix turns out that little visit cost me $677 for 2 new front calipers + labour + brake flush etc etc etc :bash:

On the bright side, the sound is gone. FINALLY

Apparently this is very common on T4R's as they have a floating brake pad and a fixed caliper so the brake pads need to be held firmly in place otherwise as the pad feathers on you get that annoying cha-ching sound. hahah Cha Ching is right...kraft dinner for this guy tonight

Check the caliper bolts I had a noise and then mine fell out and locked the front wheel we figured out then that the factory did not torque the bolt down just a suggestion I also had a rav4 with a loose caliper bolt that clicked.
