Climate control problems

My 99's climate control is acting up. The buttons only work somettimes and the times they work seem to be very random (for example when the engine is first started or sometimes randomly while driving but then they quit again). I was wondering if anyone had ever had this problem or knew what might be causing it?

the guy i just bought my runner from had this problem at about 55k. the climate control unit was replaced under warrenty.

I'd say this was pritty $$ if not under warrenty. you could also get one from a salvage yard for less. probaby 30 day warr.

My 99 with 66K miles has got the same issue. It started a couple of months ago. Now I'm at the point where the four ouside buttons won't work at all. I can control everything manually, just can't activate the defrost.

Since winter's coming I guess I'll need to find a control unit.

Let me know if you find out anyting else.

I'm new to the 4runner world, but I've see this problem alot on the honda prelude forums. I don't know if it is the same thing, but on preludes, the soldering inside the unit itself tends to come apart. The solution is to remove and dissassemble the control unit and resolder the connections.

I'm having exactly the same problem with my runner. It's out of warranty, and the replacement part from Toyota is 819 dollars. OUCH. Does anyone know of a salvage yard that might have one of these? I'm not going to pay 800 dollars for a part like that unless i absolutely have to.

I found a used one for $50 on the yotech forum. Took about an hour to do the swap. The only issue was the light bulbs needed to be swapped. I haven't had a problem since.

I would just start calling some of the local yards, I remember searching on-line and the yards typically wanted between $100 and $150.

Check the Ribbon that connects the face to the actual board inside. I took mine out to replace the bulbs...and only half of it worked. I pushed the ribbon in, and it worked. Take your climate apart, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Here are some solutions.
Is the light turns off and on? If so, i'm making a write-up for an LED mod soon. It's very simple.

Is your air not blowing out or air not clean? Refer to this website. Maybe there's something stuck inside your fan unit which it's not blowing anything. http://www.4runners.org/articles/fan/

Are we all talking about the digital climate control, or mechanical? I'm talkin bout the digital version.

If you guys can find me a digital climate control for 150 bucks I'd be happy to pay you a finders fee! I can't even find a yard around me that's had a runner in it, let alone a limited.

3rd Gen Digital Climate Control Problems

Has anyone figured out how to fix the digital climate controls if they stop working or aren't working properly? On my '99 Limited the manual controls for the temp and fan work just fine but the defrost and ac buttons are stuck in the "on" or "lighted" position and can't be turned off. I will replace the unit if I have to but I would prefer to try fixing it first and am looking for some help.

Has anyone had a problem like this?
