Clock is dead and don't really need a clock. What can go in place?

If you're at all even slightly handy with a soldering iron, maybe try putting an LED behind it.
I did this to the 'auto window' buttons on both the driver and passenger side doors. The little green LEDs were painfully dim. I got a pack of 100 bright white LEDs for like 3 bucks on Amazon.
20 minutes with my cheapy cheap soldering iron and bam.

I've really been wanting to put a temp gauge, compass, and/or volt gauge in that spot. I enjoy having the clock there but if done right it can look stock and classy putting something more useful there

Does it get even dimmer with your lights on? If not, it may be wired incorrectly so that it thinks the lights are always on so it stays in dim mode. It should have power on Pin 1 and Pin 4 and ground on Pin 2. Pin 3 is the trigger for dim mode and should only get power from the taillight circuit.

No, it's consistently dim, but I always drive with my lights on [emoji848]

No, it shouldn't. It's not hooked to the rheostat. But if you really drive with your lights on all the time, the clock will be dim all the time, unless you cut the solid green wire to Pin 3. But then it might be too bright at night, although I doubt it. You could go OCD and install a switch to control Pin 3.

Anyway, don't blame the guy who fixed it for it being dim.
