Ok so in my 02 runner the clock stopped working meaning it doesnt light up anymore. Now i know what your thinking oh its just the light bulb in it. Well heres the thing sometimes it will light up and show the time and other times it doesnt. Now it has been on for about 6 months now and im getting sick of having to look at my watch or cell phone haha. I know that its either the bulb or the wires or maybe a fuse.

Can someone tell me how to troubleshoot the problem? and how to fix it because i took it to the toyota dealership and they said it would be like 200+ to fix.... its ridiculous i know

You think that's weird. I bought my 4Runner from my inlaws, and they said the clock stopped working at about 75,000 miles. I bought it at 90K from them. Two years later I am cruising in the parking lot to my favorite sandwich shop and hit a speed bump, I'll be damned if that stupid clock did kick on! This was at 140K! 65,000 MILES OF NOT WORKING, then it's on. It lasted about a week, it's been off since. Stupid clocks.

I bought an after market CD Player after the stock one started falling apart (literally, buttons and stuff falling off) and it has a clock on it.
 
best thing to do would look on ebay or at a local junkyard, you will spend a lot more time and money trying to fix the one you have when you could get a replacement for cheap. its likely not the fuse because other things would not be working as well. I say just get a new one.
 
Sounds like a loose connection to me. I say that as it doesn't make sense that it would come and go if the clock itself were bad. More like the connector has come loose and it sometimes hits the contact and others times doesn't. Or a connection inside the clock has partially let go.
 
I have a 1999 and the clock stopped working about three years in. Every once in a while it will light up just to torment me. There have been many threads across many forums and I have never seen ONE poster claim to have fixed it (except the numbnutz that had plugged the connector in the wrong hole). I gave up on it; after 9 years and 110,000 miles it is the ONLY defect in the car. I just use the clock in my Alpine HU.
 
I sure remember when that happened to me, I had to bang up the center console and the clock came back Cool but then it goes out after like 10 miles.

A while back, I had written a topic on it and other members also encounter this problem too.

I called the dealer and they quoted me about 300 for a clock. Is bs :mad:

The only way to really to 'Fix' the clock is to just replace the whole clock. I try to fix it, I took the clock out and strip the whole thing apart and still wouldn't come back on.

Try your local junk yard and see if you can find one, as long as is from a 96-02 4runner or a Tacoma you would be good. I brought mine for under 40 and it works great. One thing I do ask for is warranty or return policy.

Other than that good luck on finding one.
 
The same here, I'm at 140k. I bought the 4Runner with the problem. Well, when I changed out my radio, I fiddled with the clock too. It turns out the thing actaully works great, but for some odd reason won't stay lit unless pressure was applied. I got it to hold for almost a day, but then it went out again. Everytime it comes on, the correct time is shown, so it obviously has something to do with the power to the light display.
 
Mine is a "cold weather" clock....I've had the 4R for a year....a few weeks ago, the temp drops below freezing and the clock works. Temp is back up now....no more clock. Haha!

Edit--Wow, I didnt notice that this is an old thread....

SAME HERE! lol it's been more than 3 years since i've seen my clock light up. then last week when temps here in GA got below freezing, i noticed my clock lit up for about 15 seconds when i start the car! so its not broken..it just something wrong with the wiring. someone has got to know a solution though. i mean clock works only when cold?...

Did you REALLY have to find all these ancient threads to revive them? I replied to this thread 2 years ago and I just got an email... now the first page has a ton of clock threads.

The intent was to tie the threads together. In essence, instead of acting as five or ten separate threads, the five or ten threads all act as one.

in other words, he intention is to help others find the relevant information in a single session by reading any one of the threads, all of which tie together.

At least that was the intent ... :)

I did not post the picture, but I should have.

And double posting is not allowed, not only in the case of the last two replies, but in the 5 other threads.

EDIT: didn't realize you meant in the Quote. it does that on it's own.
 
By the way, Mom. You don't need a 100 dollar cost soldering station for circuit board work. Oatey H-20 is plumbing flux--Oatey's own web site says: "DO NOT USE ON ELECTRICAL PARTS" on the H-20 data sheet (Caps are theirs). You get that stuff on the board, and it's toast.

A well-tinned low power soldering iron and rosin core electrical solder is the way to go. I built several Heathkits before seventh grade (then I discovered sex, drugs and rock and roll) so I have a few thousand solder joints of experience.
